Glenburn Public School students are combining their pocket change and summer job money to help purchase a new playground.

The old playground is getting worn down and the school is looking to purchase new equipment for the upcoming school year.

Nine-year-old Frankie said he is donating his coins to help buy the new playground. He said he wants to contribute to the goal, even if it’s just a small amount.

“The old playground that we have right now is getting kind of old, so we want a new playground,” said Frankie.

Fifth-grader Presley said she made a donation from her piggy bank and it’s cool to see the contributions add up for the big goal.

“To look at it and see that I donated just a little, little bit,” said Presley.

Some students, like eighth grader Dayvin, are donating money they earned from summer jobs. He said he started mowing lawns to give some money to charity. Each year, he donates a portion of his mowing earnings to a good cause.

“When I first started mowing, I wanted to give some money away to some charity,” said Dayvin.

The coin drive was the Glenbur Booster Club’s idea to get students involved in raising funds.

“They’re all bragging about it, they’re all excited about it because they get to contribute to a new playground,” said Layne Fluhrer, elementary principal.

The drive has also brought more school spirit to Glenburn, with a competition between the classes to raise the most money and earn a prize at the end of the drive.

More than half of the fundraising goal has been met with the efforts of the booster club and coin drive.

Fluhrer said over 140 elementary students use the playground daily, and the goal is to have the new equipment installed by the beginning of the next school year.
