Bitcoin (BTC) staking platform Babylon is gearing up to launch the first phase of its main network this week, as per an announcement on Monday.

The project, which is spearheaded by a Stanford University professor and has garnered attention as one of the promising new scaling endeavors for Bitcoin, will begin the phased mainnet launch on Aug. 22.

Earlier this year, Babylon closed a $70 million funding round led by Paradigm. The project is headed by David Tse, a Stanford engineering professor renowned for his past research on information theory at the University of California, Berkeley.

During the first phase, BTC holders will be able to lock their tokens on the Bitcoin network, the emailed announcement stated.

For security, Babylon is enforcing a cap of 1,000 BTC (around $57.9 million at the time of writing) that users can stake in total.

Staking involves crypto holders offering their tokens to a network to help fund its continuous operation, usually in the hopes of getting rewards in return, much like putting money in a savings account to earn interest.

This system is integral to the functioning of most blockchains, but Bitcoin is not one of them, which is why staking is largely absent from the world’s largest cryptocurrency network.

Babylon's efforts to introduce BTC staking are part of a broader wave of developments in recent months that aim to introduce greater utility to Bitcoin.

The project is being supported by over 200 “finality providers,” who will approve transactions to maintain the network's protocol, much like the role of validators in proof-of-stake ecosystems, the announcement stated.

Allnodes, Figment and Galaxy Digital are among the finality providers, as per the release.
