The long-running legal dispute between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Ripple has finally come to an end.

According to a statement released Friday, the SEC will be returning $75 million of previously escrowed funds to Ripple and the two parties have agreed on a reduced penalty of $50 million.

The SEC initially proposed a $125 million penalty, but this has now been cut in half. The case began in December 2020, when the SEC sued Ripple for allegedly raising more than $1.3 billion in unregistered securities offerings through the sales of XRP.

In a statement, SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw expressed her dissent from the settlement, criticizing it for “a tremendous disservice to the investing public and undermines the court’s role in interpreting our securities laws.”

However, the agreement does bring an end to one of the most heavily tracked crypto cases and provides some clarity on the regulatory status of XRP.

Earlier this week, crypto analyst Aayush Jindal noted that XRP price remained supported above the $2.12 level and started a fresh upward wave.
