One of the biggest pain points in Bitcoin self-custody that we haven't really solved yet is how to securely back up your private keys. Mnemonic seed phrases are the current standard for self-custody, but they're also a major attack vector for phishing scams and other attempts to steal users' funds.

In this episode, we'll be talking about seedless security models, which take a radically different approach to securing Bitcoin private keys. We'll also be hearing from Bitcoin product developers who are pioneering new approaches to seedless backups and uncovering the latest innovations in mobile self-custody.

Before we get started, let's quickly define what we mean by "seedless security models." In the context of Bitcoin, a seed refers to the 12- to 24-word mnemonic phrase that's used to derive your private keys. These seed phrases are a convenient and portable way to back up your private keys, but they also introduce a new point of failure if they're compromised.

There are a few different approaches to seedless security models, and in this episode, we'll be taking a closer look at two of the most promising ones: server-sided seedless backups and client-sided seedless backups.

Server-sided seedless backups are a good option for users who want the convenience of a fully托管式解决方案. With this approach, your private keys are encrypted and stored on a server, and you can access them later on any device with an internet connection.

The main advantage of server-sided seedless backups is that they're very easy to use. You don't have to worry about generating or storing a seed phrase, and you can be up and running in just a few minutes. However, the downside of this approach is that it introduces a third-party custodian into the equation, which some Bitcoiners may be hesitant to trust.

With this approach, your private keys are encrypted and stored on your own device, and you can back them up to any location that you choose, such as a cloud storage service or a hardware wallet.

The main advantage of client-sided seedless backups is that they're more secure than server-sided backups since your private keys never leave your device. However, the downside of this approach is that it's more complex to set up and use, and you'll need to take extra care to ensure that your backups are stored securely.

Now that we have a basic understanding of seedless security models, let's hear from some of the Bitcoin product developers who are working on the front lines of this new technology.
