More than 150,000 Ethereum validators are signaling that it's time to seriously expand the blockchain's capacity. The proposal is to raise the gas limit to 60 million units — nearly double the current 36 million.
According to data from the gaslimit.pics platform, created by Ethereum researcher Toni Wahrstätter, roughly 15% of all validators on the network are voting in favor. While this may not sound very impressive, for the blockchain community, it's already a significant endorsement.
What is the gas limit, and why raise it?
For those who haven't quite mastered the intricacies of Ethereum, gas is a unit of measurement for the computational effort required to execute transactions or smart contracts. A block's gas limit indicates the maximum amount of gas that can be consumed by all transactions in a single block.
Increasing this limit allows each block to process more data and handle more transactions. Simple math: more gas in a block means more transactions in the same amount of time, which leads to fewer queues and lower latency.
What's especially notable about this change is that it doesn't require a hard fork. Validators simply adjust their node settings when proposing blocks. Once more than 50% of validators express support, the block gas limit will automatically adjust.
History of Changes and Current Situation
Ethereum has undergone similar increases before. In February this year, the limit increased from 30 million to 36 million units. Prior to that, the last adjustment took place in 2021, when the limit doubled from 15 to 30 million units.
This is a logical progression: the network is growing, there are more users, and the load is increasing, so it is time to expand capacity. The only question is whether the infrastructure can support such changes.
Technical Nuances and Possible Risks
This is where things get interesting. Developers warn that increasing the limit may create additional load on node operators' hardware and could potentially affect network operations. It's a classic dilemma: we want more performance, but we risk breaking what already works.
Increasing the gas limit is not a magic wand. More gas means more computations per block, which in turn demands greater server capacity. Node operators may find that their hardware simply can't handle the increased load.
On the other hand, Ethereum's current capacity is clearly struggling to keep up with growing demand. Users regularly face high fees and delays, especially during periods of high activity. Raising the gas limit to 60 million units could make life much easier for all participants in the ecosystem.
Interestingly, this initiative comes from the validators themselves, not from the core development team. This shows that the community is ready to take responsibility for the network's development themselves, rather than waiting for instructions from the top.
So far, 15% of validators are still far from the required 50% needed for an automatic change. But the trend is clear: node operators see the need to expand the network's capabilities and are ready to support this change.
Ethereum continues to evolve, balancing the needs of users with technical limitations. Raising the gas limit is another step in this direction, the results of which will become clear over time.
