Critics on both sides have denounced the scheme. (In a scathing op-ed published Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal demanded a list of attendees be made public “so Americans know who may be trying to buy access to the President.”)

“I really have a difficult time imagining that if this was a Democratic president doing the exact same thing you wouldn’t be outraged,” Tapper said.

The Speaker, however, claimed complete ignorance on the subject — citing his round-the-clock involvement with getting the Trump-backed “Big, Beautiful” budget bill passed.

You know, the president lied about his involvement in the business dealings, all of that. The evidence just piled up.”
