CNN's Jake Tapper grilled House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) about the dinner President Donald Trump hosted for the top investors of the $Trump meme coin.

CNN's Jake Tapper grilled House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Sunday about the dinner President Donald Trump hosted for the top investors of the $Trump meme coin.

In a contentious back-and-forth on State of the Union, Tapper confronted Johnson about the dinner Trump hosted Thursday night at his golf club in Virginia — where the top 220 purchasers of the coin got some private face time with the president. Critics on both sides have denounced the scheme. (In a scathing op-ed published Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal demanded a list of attendees be made public “so Americans know who may be trying to buy access to the President.”)

“I really have a difficult time imagining that if this was a Democratic president doing the exact same thing you wouldn’t be outraged,” Tapper said.

The Speaker, however, claimed complete ignorance on the subject — citing his round-the-clock involvement with getting the Trump-backed “Big, Beautiful” budget bill passed.

“Well, look, I don’t know anything about the dinner,” Johnson said. “I was a little busy this past week, as you know, getting the reconciliation package over the line. And so I’m not going to comment on something I haven’t even heard about. I’m sure who was there, what the purpose was.”

Tapper followed up by noting that Johnson was a vocal critic of Hunter Biden raking in $5 million from a Ukrainian energy firm in an alleged influence peddling scheme.

“You oversaw, as speaker, a congressional investigation into President Biden’s ties to his son Hunter’s questionable business dealings to enrich him,” Tapper said. “You seemed to think it was your responsibility to look into this sort of thing then.”

“The big important distinction, the Biden crime family, as they were named, earned that title,” Johnson replied. “Why? Because they use shell companies, fake LLCs, a series of what appeared to be money laundering operation. And Hunter Biden, of course, with his difficult past and the corruption in his past, the family on the public dole, or on the president’s dole. You know, the president lied about his involvement in the business dealings, all of that. The evidence just piled up.”

He added, “The difference, of course, is that President Trump does everything out in the open. He’s not trying to hide anything. There’s no shell companies or fake LLCs or fake family businesses. He’s putting it out there so everybody can evaluate for themselves.”

Tapper pushed Johnson once more — imploring him to make a call for the list of the Trump dinner’s attendees to be made available.

“Shouldn’t we at least just know who was at the dinner?” Tapper asked. “Wouldn’t you want to know that list of people?”

“Again, I don’t know anything about that dinner,” Johnson said. “I do know that President Trump is the most transparent president in the most-transparent administration, probably in history. He has nothing to hide, and he’s out there trying to advance America’s interests.”
