As the cryptocurrency world celebrates Bitcoin Pizza Day today, highlighting the first recorded real-world Bitcoin transaction in 2010, where Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10,000 Bitcoins for two pizzas, now valued at over $1 billion, the story sparks a broader reflection on the evolution—and ongoing enigma—of Bitcoin, says AJ Bell’s Laith Khalaf.
Bitco and of Bitcoin laith laith laith laith。
This year’s anniversary is especially noteworthy: it’s been 15 years since Hanyecz’s tale first emerged, recounting his serendipitous meeting with a British student who used a prepaid Visa card to purchase two pizzas from Papa Johns, leading to a chain of events that saw the Bitcoins changing hands several times.
Highlighting the pizza incident, which saw the coins shifting from one peer-to-peer payment method to another, rendering the transaction "typically clumsy and inconvenient" despite its historical significance, Khalaf notes that the tale underscores the early days of Bitcoin, largely confined to the fringes of society.
However, despite its controversial beginnings, littered with instances of criminality and scams, such as the FTX scandal, which saw the crypto exchange's founder sentenced to 25 years in jail for stealing $8 billion to fund illegitimate investments and lavish spending, Bitcoin has gradually moved into the mainstream.
Institutions, like Tesla and MicroStrategy, are now holding Bitcoin on their balance sheets, and last year, the US financial regulator approved Bitcoin ETPs (Exchange Traded Products), making it easier for retail and professional investors to gain exposure to the cryptocurrency.
This development is pivotal in the broader context of Donald Trump's stated goal to make the US "the crypto capital of the planet," set against the backdrop of El Salvador already having approved Bitcoin as legal tender and announcing plans to construct a Bitcoin city.
As the narrative unfolds, highlighting the role of global digitalisation and the manipulation of major currencies through Quantitative Easing in fuelling Bitcoin's price escalation, which has reached $104,600 per coin, Khalaf points out that such extreme price appreciation usually spawns concern, evident in previous instances of tulip mania in the 17th century, South Sea companies in the 18th century, railroad stocks in the 19th century, or technology stocks in the 20th century.

Returning to Hanyecz's story, which began with him responding to a request for pizza on a Bitcoin chat room, leading to a British student, Jeremy Sturdivant, buying two pizzas from Papa Johns using dollars on his credit card, and later converting the Bitcoin he received into dollars for travelling expenses on a trip around the US, rendering it "a closed loop transaction in fiat currency", the tale highlights the early days of Bitcoin, largely confined to the fringes of society.

While there are more outlets today which accept Bitcoin, including Subway which is experimenting with the cryptocurrency, the vast majority do not. Consumers can already buy products by flashing their mobile phone at a payment terminal using conventional currencies. Even those which accept Bitcoin almost certainly convert it into conventional currencies immediately. Subway won't pay its staff in crypto, or its suppliers, so by holding something as volatile as Bitcoin, it could quickly find itself out of pocket if it didn't convert it back into 'real' money immediately. Consumers face the same issue. Their bills and expenditure are in pounds, euros, dollars, yuan, yen or rupees. Holding large sums of spending money in Bitcoin might well leave consumers unable to buy the goods and services they want if the cryptocurrency takes one of its frequent tumbles.
Over time, more businesses, consumers and investors may embrace Bitcoin. But it's by no means certain, and there are plenty of obstacles, not least the potential launch of central bank digital currencies which may usurp many of the functions crypto prides itself on. It goes without saying that if you are buying crypto, do so with a small amount of money which you are able to lose without it having a dramatic effect on your overall wealth. And for goodness' sake if you're buying a takeaway this weekend, make sure you don't pay too much for it.
