The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has created an Ethereum-based token called NexFundAI as part of a sting operation to expose illegal activities in the cryptocurrency markets. Through this operation, the FBI has been able to take legal action against several individuals and companies for market manipulation.

The FBI created NexFundAI with the help of cooperating witnesses to gather information on fraudulent practices in the cryptocurrency sector, particularly market manipulation, where traders were artificially influencing the prices of cryptocurrencies for their benefit.

After the operation, the FBI charged 30 people and companies, including three market makers companies that facilitate the buying and selling of assets and others involved in manipulating cryptocurrency assets. A key illegal practice they used was “wash trading,” where traders buy and sell the same asset simultaneously to make it look like there is high trading activity, giving a false impression of the asset’s value.

The market makers named in the investigation were ZMQuant, CLS Global, and MyTrade, who were involved in the conspiracy without realizing that NexFundAI was created by the FBI. They are accused of engaging in wash trading, which contributed to a fraudulent trading environment and manipulated the token’s trading volume.

조사 대상으로 지목된 마켓 메이커는 ZMQuant, CLS Global, MyTrade였으며 이들은 NexFundAI가 FBI에 의해 만들어졌다는 사실을 인지하지 못한 채 음모에 가담했습니다. 그들은 사기 거래 환경을 조장하고 토큰의 거래량을 조작하는 워시 트레이딩에 관여한 혐의를 받고 있습니다.

During the investigation, Liu Zhou, who was associated with MyTrade, allegedly told NexFundAI promoters that MyTrade had an advantage in the market because they could “control the pump and dump.” This means they could manipulate prices by buying and selling in a way that artificially raised or lowered the value of the asset. This tactic, along with insider trading, allowed them to cheat the system and profit unfairly.

조사 과정에서 MyTrade와 관련된 Liu Zhou는 NexFundAI 프로모터에게 MyTrade가 "펌프 및 덤프를 제어"할 수 있기 때문에 시장에서 이점이 있다고 말했습니다. 이는 자산 가치를 인위적으로 높이거나 낮추는 방식으로 사고파는 방식으로 가격을 조작할 수 있음을 의미합니다. 내부자 거래와 함께 이 전술을 통해 시스템을 속이고 부당하게 이익을 얻을 수 있었습니다.

This operation marks a new chapter in financial crime, as Jodi Cohen, head of the FBI’s Boston division, pointed out, stating that this case is a modern version of traditional financial crimes, adapted to the digital age. The FBI’s involvement in cryptocurrency shows how complex and sophisticated criminal activity has become in this sector.

The Department of Justice recovered $25 million in fraudulent proceeds from this operation, which will be returned to the investors who were affected by the manipulation, showing that efforts are being made to not only catch the criminals but also compensate the victims.
