However, Sleep Token’s creative daringness surpasses any conspiracy theories by far, not because of the spectacle that accompanies secrecy, but because of efforts to defy genre and expectations. Their highly anticipated new record, Even In Arcadia, sees Sleep Token at their most evolved creatively and emotionally.

Most impressively, Sleep Token’s fanbase accurately guessed the record’s track listing on Reddit. Though they couldn’t have been prepared for the tsunami wave of emotions that hit from the breakdown in “Look To Windward,” a precursor for the rest of the album. Ironically, most of the LP’s themes deal with Vessel’s identity struggles, whether beyond the mask or otherwise. His internal struggles run deeply, seemingly overtaking much of his mental space. The album intro says, “I used to know myself,” and that someone else “used to know me well.” His newfound fame has made it nearly impossible to maintain meaningful personal connections. At times, he can hardly connect with himself.

This record stands tall as one of the most sonically interesting out right now. A long-time friend of mine is a Sleep Token aficionado, and I believe I’ve finally seen the light. We initially met in the Fall Out Boy fandom—before the stans roll their eyes, please hear me out. I implore you to bear with me on this. The group shares many similarities, and I can see where she would feel the pull towards them coming from point A. Sleep Token’s contemporaries have been writing about struggles with public perception, morality, and the concept of the self since 2005. Moreover, they also genre-bend the way Sleep Token does. Arguably, Sleep Token takes it five steps further, unbothered by the potential backlash of treading too far off the beaten path.

The result of their creative choices is certainly worth any negative reviews (not from me, stay safe though). Their articulate balance between R&B, hardcore, and something new entirely is mind-boggling and evokes a feeling I hadn’t experienced since I was a teenager. Admittedly, I had a hard time telling my aforementioned friend what my favorite songs from the LP were because they don’t sound like anything that’s in the mainstream today, or ever. Even In Arcadia is Sleep Token’s strongest work to date. They have found unbreakable group synergy, which has transmuted into a coherent full-length LP. I would be more surprised if Even In Arcadia is not nominated for any major awards—though the rock categories for all of them remain un-televised …

To answer my friend’s question, “Dangerous” has consistently stuck as my favorite track in Even In Arcadia. To me, it is the most sonically stunning of all the arrangements, upholding that signature balance of genre-bending and left turns that Sleep Token is known for. Lyrically, the track tugs at my heartstrings; that chorus had me staring at my ceiling for a hot second. Moreover, Vessel’s voice has grown on me with time. Other artists, like Magnolia Park, have similarly integrated R&B vocals into heavier music. However, there’s a smoothness to Vessel that his contemporaries mask with rugged angst. There’s a place for all of that, but Sleep Token’s is ooey gooey, satisfying to the soul.

I encourage skeptics and fans alike to think deeply as they listen to Even In Arcadia for the first time. By my fifth listen, I assumed falsely that I had unpacked each layer and examined every crevice. I was sorely mistaken; there is something new to unpack every time you tune in. From the strong lead single Caramel to the full album rollout, Sleep Token have absolutely outdone themselves with Even In Arcadia.
