The original Bitcoin whitepaper is now available again on the Bitcoin.org website, following a series of legal challenges involving Craig Wright, who claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator.

The whitepaper was removed from the site in 2021 after Wright, through Tulip Trading Limited, filed a copyright lawsuit against the operators of Bitcoin.org, led by the pseudonymous figure Cøbra. A UK court ordered the site to remove the whitepaper from visibility in the country.

However, Wright’s claim to the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto—and thus to the copyright of the Bitcoin whitepaper—was critically undermined in subsequent legal proceedings.

A UK High Court ruled in March 2024 that Wright was not Satoshi Nakamoto. The judgment was damning, with the presiding judge noting that Wright had engaged in “technobabble” and had lied “extensively” during the proceedings.

The development was celebrated by Stepanov, who noted that the whitepaper had been "hosted on 100+ sites during the last 2 years as a protest against Wright's maximalist claims."
