Officials from Argentina are engaging in discussions with their counterparts in El Salvador to gain insights into strategies and experiences related to adopting Bitcoin. A delegation from the Argentinian National Securities Commission (CNV) met with representatives from El Salvador's National Digital Assets Commission (CNAD) last week to assess the impact of Bitcoin adoption on the economy over the past few years.

El Salvador became the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021, making it a legal payment option alongside the US dollar.

During their meeting with CNAD's Juan Reyes, Roberto Silva and Patricia Boedo from Argentina highlighted the rapid expansion of the crypto ecosystem globally in recent years. Officials from both nations exchanged ideas and concepts pertaining to the use of Bitcoin, which is the most widely used cryptocurrency in the world.

"El Salvador has emerged as one of the leading countries in the use of Bitcoin. We want to strengthen ties with the Republic of El Salvador and therefore, we are going to explore the possibility of signing collaboration agreements with them,” Silva, who serves as the President of the Argentinian National Securities Commission, stated in a notice that was released.

According to the WorldBank, Argentina has one of the largest economies in Latin America, with a gross domestic product (GDP) of approximately $640 billion. However, a recent Reuters report indicates that the Argentinian economy experienced a year-on-year decline of 8.4 percent in March of this year.

Various aspects of Argentina's economy, including consumer spending and sales figures, are reportedly facing strain due to market pressures. Furthermore, Argentina has a significant debt burden, reportedly owing around $45 million (roughly Rs. 370 crore) to the International Monetary Fund.

This economic instability, coupled with Argentina's reliance on the US dollar, which has seen ups and downs in recent months as a result of interest rate hikes, could be among the reasons why the country is now considering Bitcoin.

“It seems essential to me to continue strengthening ties with a Republic that is a pioneer in the subject, and that has vast experience in the subject,” Patricia Boedo, who serves as the Vice President of Argentina's CNV, remarked.

In a previous move, Argentina signed an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to restrict the use of cryptocurrencies in an effort to curb informality and money laundering. This agreement, which was finalised in March 2022, was extended to Argentina by the IMF after the debt-ridden nation requested a restructuring of its debt repayment plan.

In April 2023, El Salvador reportedly saw a 17.8 percent decrease in BTC-based remittances. As of May 14, the Salvadoran treasury reportedly held 5,748 BTC tokens, which is valued at over $393 million (roughly Rs. 3,272 crore).

While El Salvador did not publicly address this issue, the country continues to express support for the cryptocurrency.
