Worldcoin: A Controversial Crypto Project Aiming to Create a Universal Digital Identity System Using Biometric Data
Nov 03, 2024 at 09:52 am
Worldcoin has sparked controversy across global jurisdictions. Worldcoin's aim is to create a universal digital identity system using biometric data

Worldcoin, a crypto project aiming to create a universal digital identity system, has encountered legal scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions. The project, which offers participants 25 WLD (around $115) for verifying their identity, has sparked controversy due to its collection methods and the potential for misusing sensitive biometric data.
Worldcoin's method involves using a device called "Orb" to scan a person's iris for identity verification and issuing digital tokens. This process has raised concerns about the depth and security of the data collected, prompting several countries to express reservations or initiate investigations.
In Mexico, the National Institute for Transparency, Access to Information and Personal Data Protection (INAI) has launched an official inquiry following complaints from citizens concerned about their personal data security. The INAI is scrutinizing Worldcoin's operations for potential violations of personal data rights.
The concerns mainly center around the ethical implications and the security framework of collecting and storing biometric data. Critics argue that despite Worldcoin's assurance of not retaining personal identifiers, the mere accumulation of iris scans poses a significant risk of data breaches and misuse.
Furthermore, there are allegations that the project's lack of transparency in its operational processes and data handling may infringe upon users' privacy rights, highlighting the need for stringent regulatory oversight to protect individual privacy in the digital age.
Worldcoin's Defense
In response to the backlash, Sam Altman, the initiative's supporter, defends the project as a necessary evolution in digital verification to combat the rise of bots. He insists that Worldcoin operates with a high regard for privacy and complies with all applicable laws, emphasizing that the technology was designed to secure user identity comprehensively.
As the debate unfolds, the crypto and tech communities are closely watching the outcomes of regulatory reviews and the impact of these findings on the future of digital identity verification.
Worldcoin (WLD) is currently trading at $1.80, showing a daily decrease of 0.90%. In the past week, it has dropped 10.84%, although it has gained 11.64% over the past month, reflecting mixed performance. The trading volume over the last 24 hours is approximately $122.55 million, indicating moderate activity.
