Victim, Hyperliquid, Hacker: Crypto's Wild West Gets Wilder
Oct 11, 2025 at 03:03 am
Hyperliquid hit by another hack! Plus, North Korean hackers are making bank. Is your crypto safe?

Hold onto your hats, folks! The world of crypto is getting a whole lot more interesting (and not in a good way). We're diving into the latest drama surrounding Hyperliquid, some unfortunate victims, and, of course, those pesky hackers.
Hyperliquid Under Fire: Another One Bites the Dust
Just when you thought it was safe to trade, BAM! Hyperliquid got hit...again. This time, a reported $21 million vanished from a wallet. Blockchain sleuths at PeckShieldAlert pointed fingers at a private key compromise. Ouch. Looks like someone wasn't practicing good key hygiene.
The hacker didn't exactly stick around to admire their handiwork. They zipped those stolen funds over to Ethereum, converting 17.5 million DAI and 3.1 million SYRUPUSDP in a blink. PeckShieldAlert called it a "major private key compromise," raising serious questions about wallet security in decentralized systems.
And get this – this isn't Hyperliquid's first rodeo. A week prior, a Hyperdrive attack cost them around $782,000. Two breaches in a month? That's gotta sting.
North Korea's Crypto Heist: A $2 Billion Shocker
Speaking of hackers, North Korea is apparently having a banner year. Elliptic, a blockchain analytics firm, says they've pilfered over $2 billion in crypto in 2025 alone! That's triple last year's haul, making it clear that state-sponsored cyber theft is getting seriously sophisticated. The most notable incident was the $1.46 billion breach of the cryptocurrency exchange Bybit in February 2025.
Exchanges are still prime targets, but Elliptic noted that individual investors with deep pockets are also in the crosshairs. Why? Because personal wallets often lack the security of corporate custodians. Easy pickings, apparently. As crypto prices rise, the risks for individuals also increase. Make sure you keep your digital assets safe!
Bitcoin ATMs: A Scammer's Paradise
But wait, there's more! Remember those Bitcoin ATMs popping up everywhere? Turns out, they're becoming a favorite tool for scammers. The FBI says Americans lost nearly $250 million to Bitcoin ATM scams in 2024 – double the previous year. AARP is even warning its 38 million members about it.
The scam is simple: Con artists convince victims to deposit cash into Bitcoin ATMs. Once the money's in, it's gone. The scammers are using this method to scam people from all walks of life.
So, What's the Takeaway?
Crypto security is no joke. Whether it's a private key compromise, a North Korean cyberattack, or a Bitcoin ATM scam, the risks are real and ever-present. It's a good time to brush up on security best practices, including using hardware wallets, enabling multi-signature security, and being super-cautious about clicking suspicious links.
For example, the precision of the Hyperliquid hack shows how important offline storage of private keys can be. It would be best if you used cold wallets or multi-signature protection to prevent such incidents.
Personal View
As someone who's been following crypto for a while, I am getting increasingly concerned about the evolving threat landscape. It's not enough to just "HODL" and hope for the best. We all need to be proactive about protecting our digital assets. Exchanges need better security. Individuals need to be more careful. And maybe, just maybe, we need to find a way to make it a little harder for state-sponsored hackers to fund their nuclear programs with our Bitcoin.
It's a wild west out there, folks. Stay safe, stay informed, and don't let those hackers get you down!
Until next time, keep your keys safe and your spirits high!
