Solana vs Sui: Which Blockchain Will Dominate in 2024?
Oct 21, 2024 at 05:02 pm
In 2024, two cryptocurrencies are playing a significant role in the competition for dominance in the crypto world: Solana and Sui. Both have the potential to define the next major steps in blockchain technology and are the focus of investors and developers.

In the realm of cryptocurrency, two blockchains are vying for dominance in 2024: Solana and Sui. Both have the potential to define the next major steps in blockchain technology, attracting the attention of investors and developers alike. While Solana has long been touted as the “Ethereum killer,” Sui has recently garnered significant buzz, leading to speculation that it could eclipse Solana. This article will delve into a comprehensive comparison of the two projects, examining their technologies, funding, tokenomics, and challenges to determine which blockchain is poised for the greatest success in 2024.
Solana vs Sui: Founders and funding
Solana was founded in 2017 by Anatoli Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm software engineer, with the initial goal of creating a decentralized alternative to centralized exchanges like NASDAQ. However, over the years, Solana has evolved into a versatile blockchain that seamlessly supports decentralized finance (DeFi) and payments. The non-profit Solana Foundation, based in Switzerland, spearheads the coordination and development of the Solana blockchain.
Solana was conceived as a solution to the scalability trilemma, aiming to combine high throughput, low latency, and strong security without compromising any of these aspects. To achieve this, Solana employs a unique combination of technologies, including a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain, the innovative “Proof-of-History” (PoH) technology, and a high-performance networking protocol called “Turbine.”
Through these mechanisms, Solana is capable of processing an astounding 200,000 transactions per second (TPS) – a figure that surpasses most other blockchains by several orders of magnitude. Moreover, it boasts a blazing-fast block time of just 400 milliseconds, rendering Solana one of the swiftest blockchains in existence.
In contrast, Sui also utilizes a proof-of-stake blockchain but adopts a unique approach. It leverages the Move programming language, initially developed by Meta (formerly Facebook), to create a highly scalable and modular blockchain. Unlike many cryptocurrencies, which employ an account-based system, Sui focuses on objects, enabling a wider range of possibilities.
During internal testing, Sui achieved an impressive throughput of 297,000 TPS, and its block time of 390 milliseconds is even faster than Solana's. This exceptional performance is attributed to Sui's efficient architecture and optimized networking capabilities.
Solana vs Sui: Tokenomics and price performance
Solana’s native cryptocurrency, SOL, has a maximum initial supply of 500 million tokens, out of which approximately 60% were allocated to investors, 20% to the team, and 20% to the Solana Foundation. SOL’s initial inflation rate stood at 8%, gradually decreasing to 1.5% in the long term. Solana’s early investors enjoyed phenomenal returns, with the token’s price surging to 650x its initial ICO price.
On the other hand, Sui’s native token, SUI, boasts a max supply of 10 billion tokens, with 50% reserved for community initiatives and the remaining distributed among investors, the Miston Labs team, and early contributors. Unlike Solana, Sui is still in the early stages of development, with a significant portion of tokens yet to be unlocked over the next few years. This could potentially influence the price once these tokens enter the market.
Solana vs Sui: Adoption and usage
Solana has positioned itself as a blockchain for the masses, catering to a wide range of users with its ease of use and high speed. As a result, millions of users worldwide are utilizing Solana-based applications. For instance, the popular Phantom wallet, a browser extension designed specifically for Solana, has garnered over 4 million downloads.
Furthermore, Solana has made great strides in the DeFi world through partnerships with institutional players such as Visa and a Total Value Locked (TVL) of around $5 billion. This synergy has fueled the launch of numerous DeFi protocols, lending platforms, and decentralized exchanges on Solana, offering a diverse ecosystem of financial services.
Although younger, Sui is already showing impressive numbers. The Sui Scan Explorer indicates over 5 million monthly active wallets, reflecting rapid adoption. However, Sui still lags behind Solana in the DeFi realm, with a TVL of only about $1 billion.
Nevertheless, Sui users are highly engaged, especially in blockchain-based games, which have seen a surge in popularity recently. This bodes well for Sui, given its strong foundations and potential to integrate with various applications seamlessly.
Solana vs Sui: Which blockchain will dominate in 2024?
Both Solana and Sui are exceptional blockchains with strengths and weaknesses. While Solana boasts greater adoption, liquidity, and DeFi presence, Sui's advanced technology, lowerスループット, and promising use cases in blockchain gaming could propel it to new heights.
Ultimately, the victor will depend on various factors, including technological developments,
