Sleep Token have scored a huge Number One debut with Even In Arcadia.
To any who have followed them in recent years, it will come as no surprise that Sleep Token‘s fan base is, put simply, rabid. Whether indirectly with their cryptic storytelling, or directly with songs like “Provider” that feel tailored to the BookTok community (“Yeah, I see you, the only bad baddie spitting ice in the room / The only good girl this side of the moon / And you’re the only game that I like to lose“), the anonymous quartet have cultivated a zealous following – affectionately termed ‘worshippers.’
Now, having signed to RCA Records, they have well and truly broken into the mainstream, achieving their first ever UK #1 with their fourth studio album, Even In Arcadia. In the process, they have topped the likes of PinkPantheress, Kali Uchis, and Arcade Fire. This marks the third time the group have featured in the Top 40, after This Place Will Become Your Tomb (39) and Take Me Back To Eden (3), and the first metal album to claim the crown since Linkin Park‘s From Zero at the tail end of last year. Three of the tracks, including the title track, also feature in the week’s Top 40 songs.
When announced as headliners for this year’s Download, many questioned their eligibility, as even on the back of the phenomenal Take Me Back To Eden, they lacked their pedigree of their counterparts in Green Day and Korn. Well today, Sleep Token have stamped their claim, and are in fact currently out-streaming their fellow Download headliners. Even In Arcadia is also #1 in Germany and on Australia’s ARIA chart, and projected to top the Billboard 200, which updates on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, Counting Crows secure their tenth Top 40 appearance with Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets! and The Amazons occupy the Number 26 spot with 21st Century Fiction.
