Sarawak-based tech startup Metadise to represent Malaysia at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) in California

Kuching-based tech startup Metadise has reached a major milestone as it prepares to represent Malaysia at the prestigious Augmented World Expo (AWE) in California next month.

The company was selected by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to showcase its immersive metaverse project, ‘Tech Me To Sarawak,’ on the international stage.

The announcement was made during the official opening of Metadise headquarters today (May 17).

Director of Metadise, Afiq Fadhli Narawi, said the project aims to digitally promote Sarawak’s rich heritage, nature, and tourism experiences through a metaverse platform that blends virtual reality, interactive storytelling and blockchain technology.

“This is more than just a digital project — it’s a new way of telling Sarawak’s story. We’re proud to represent Malaysia and Sarawak on a global stage, and to showcase our culture, nature, adventure, food and festivals in an immersive way,” Afiq said.

The company’s platform, still in its beta phase, features virtual recreations of iconic Sarawak landmarks such as Darul Hana Bridge, Carpenter Street, the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and the Borneo Cultures Museum.

The initiative, funded under MDEC’s Digital Content Grant, allows users to explore Sarawak digitally — whether by adopting a virtual orangutan, shopping for local delicacies, or learning about indigenous artefacts via Non Fungible Token (NFT) technology.

“We’ve even recreated Carpenter Street where users can experience Sarawak laksa, kek lapis and local crafts. It’s about creating digital tourism that inspires real-world travel,” he added.

Being selected by MDEC to represent Malaysia at the Augmented World Expo 2025, the world’s largest Augmented Reality event, is a major endorsement of Metadise’s innovation and potential.

“We’re honoured to be chosen as Malaysia’s representative. This is a testament to the talent and creativity we have in Sarawak,” Afiq said.

He also expressed hope that more local agencies, creators, and entrepreneurs would come forward to collaborate, whether to promote their content, host virtual events, or build digital spaces such as virtual galleries or learning institutions within Metadise.
