Russia’s CBDC Digital Ruble Coming in 2025

Sep 13, 2024 at 04:27 am

The Russian central bank aka Bank of Russia has recently shown readiness for a nationwide launch of its central bank digital currency (CBDC) Digital Ruble.

Russia’s CBDC Digital Ruble Coming in 2025

Russia is gearing up for a grand launch of its central bank digital currency (CBDC), the Digital Ruble, aiming to provide seamless access to the CBDC infrastructure for its citizens.

According to a recent announcement by the Bank of Russia, the largest banks in the country will be facilitating Digital Ruble transactions for their clients by July 1, 2025. These transactions will include money transfers and account management. Additionally, businesses operating in Russia will be required to accept Digital Ruble payments for goods and services sold, using QR codes.

To support these changes, the Bank of Russia has also proposed legislative amendments, which are currently being submitted to the Finance Ministry. The regulator is currently conducting a pilot project with 15 banks to test the functionality of Russia’s CBDC. Furthermore, it is also aiming to broaden the payment as well as transfer options in the national currency.

Following the U.S. sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been actively exploring ways to remain engaged in the international trading market. One strategy being considered is the use of decentralized cryptocurrencies for cross-border settlements.

Beginning this month on September 1, Russia has legalized the use of crypto for cross-border payments. In line with this development, the central bank has been backing the use of digital assets for payments with trials on the way.

Russia’s relationship with crypto has been characterized by sharp shifts in policy Throughout 2023, the country went from introducing a ban in January to legalizing crypto a month before. After completing their trials, the Moscow Exchange and St. Petersburg Currency Exchange are set to launch their own crypto trading platforms by the end of this year.

On the other hand, Russia is also considering legalizing Bitcoin mining operations within the country. The new legislation will impose strict regulations on crypto mining in Russia, mandating that all mining operators be subject to oversight by the government and the Bank of Russia, including income reporting and tax obligations. With this move, Russia aims to establish a clear framework for the sale of mined cryptocurrencies.

Taking Cues from Digital Yuan’s Success

With the latest developments surrounding the Digital Ruble, Russia is closely following the footsteps of its strong economic ally, China, which has been working on its CBDC, the Digital Yuan, for several years now.

In a recent statement, PBoC Deputy Governor Lu Lei revealed that the Digital Yuan CBDC has now hit a significant milestone, facilitating transactions amounting to $1 trillion. Moreover, China is collaborating with multiple countries on a cross-border digital currency initiative, designed to enhance global payment systems.

In an effort to circumvent the impact of US sanctions, BRICS nations are already exploring an alternative to SWIFT. Previous reports also indicated that they could experiment with a Gold-backed stablecoin.
