May 14, 2024 at 10:57 am
Rain Crypto Exchange, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange in the Middle East, has fallen victim to a hacking incident resulting in the loss of approximately $14.1 million worth of crypto assets, according to crypto detective ZachXBT. The exchange has since confirmed the incident but assures that customer funds remain protected and unaffected, with Rain Group covering any potential losses. However, the details surrounding the vulnerability exploited by the hackers remain undisclosed.

Rain Cryptocurrency Exchange Targeted in Stealthy Cyberattack, Resulting in Loss of $14.1 Million
Bahrain, May 14, 2024 - Rain Cryptocurrency Exchange, a renowned platform known for its adherence to Islamic finance principles in the Middle East, has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyberattack that resulted in the theft of approximately $14.1 million worth of digital assets.
The incident, which occurred on April 29, 2024, was initially detected by renowned crypto detective ZachXBT, who reported the unauthorized outflow of funds from Rain's Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and XRP wallets.
According to ZachXBT's investigation, the attackers successfully exploited Rain's network and transferred the stolen ETH coins to the popular decentralized exchange UniSwap shortly after the hack. The incident remained undisclosed until May 13, 2024, when ZachXBT's findings were made public.
In an official statement released on May 14, 2024, Rain Cryptocurrency Exchange acknowledged the hack and confirmed that the situation had been resolved. The exchange emphasized that Rain Group, its parent company, has fully covered any potential losses incurred during the incident, ensuring that all customer funds remain secure and unaffected.
"We prioritize the protection of our customers' interests and have taken all necessary measures to mitigate any risks associated with this incident. All customer and operational activities, including crypto transactions and fiat deposits and withdrawals, continue uninterrupted across our platforms," Rain's official statement read.
Despite Rain's transparency in disclosing the incident, the details surrounding the attack remain unclear. No reports have been released explaining how the hackers breached Rain's security protocols and exploited its digital wallets.
The incident has raised concerns within the cryptocurrency industry, particularly given the recent reports of North Korean state-backed hacking groups targeting crypto exchanges. Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has identified a new malware strain called Durian, which is believed to be employed by these hacking groups to compromise exchange systems.
Rain's customer base and stakeholders are advised to remain vigilant and follow best practices for securing their crypto assets, including enabling two-factor authentication, utilizing hardware wallets, and promptly reporting any suspicious activity to the exchange.
The cyberattack on Rain Cryptocurrency Exchange underscores the evolving nature of cybersecurity threats in the digital currency sector and reinforces the need for robust security measures to protect against unauthorized access and theft of digital assets.
