Peter Brandt Expresses Serious Doubts About the Stability of Tether (USDT)
Jun 20, 2024 at 11:26 pm
Peter Brandt has expressed serious doubts about the stability of Tether, the world's largest stablecoin. This concern echoes that of various financial watchdogs

Peter Brandt, a renowned technical commodities trader, has voiced his apprehensions about the stability of Tether (USDT), the world’s largest stablecoin. This concern aligns with the critical observations made by several financial watchdogs and analysts regarding USDT and the practices of Tether, its issuer.
Brandt's comments come in response to a recent post by Consumers' Research, the oldest consumer protection organization in the United States. The nonprofit highlighted some troubling details about Tether's operations.
One of the key revelations is the allegation that Tether has been misleading the public about the sound backing of its U.S. dollars, a claim that the report suggests is setting the stage for doubt and distrust.
“Interesting perspective,” Brandt writes in response. “My contention for years is that Tether is headed eventually for disaster. I agree with this all. The USD will eventually meet its demise, but years after the same is experienced by Tether.”
Adding to the concerns is Tether's persistent refusal to undergo a thorough, independent financial audit, an omission that speaks volumes. Consumers' Research strongly criticizes this lack of transparency, emphasizing the risks faced by potential users of Tether.
The critique extends further, with a spotlight on Tether's creditworthiness, or rather the lack of it. In December, S&P conducted a risk assessment of leading stablecoins and ranked Tether alarmingly low, placing it near the bottom of their scale. The report raises several red flags, including Tether's reserve management and non-compliance with regulatory frameworks.
To make matters worse, an investigation by the New York Attorney General's office revealed that Tether's reserves had a substantial exposure to commercial paper and securities from Chinese entities, including some major state-owned banks. While Tether maintains that it no longer holds any China-related assets, the absence of an independent audit leaves these claims unverified, adding to the narrative of risk and uncertainty surrounding the stablecoin.
JPMorgan also shared similar concerns, highlighting an “increasing concentration in Tether” as a worrying trend impacting the crypto industry at large. The report adds that Tether is particularly vulnerable owing to its “lack of regulatory compliance and transparency.”
