Options Traders Fuel Bitcoin's Surge to $100,000 Target
Apr 25, 2024 at 01:04 am
Options traders are investing heavily in the prediction that Bitcoin will reach $100,000, with bullish options expiring in December and March being particularly popular. Market maker Wintermute attributes this optimism to Bitcoin's ability to stay above $60,000, with traders placing $6.3 billion worth of bullish bets expiring in April.

Options Traders Fuel Optimism for Bitcoin's Surge to $100,000
Market analysts at the crypto market maker Wintermute have conducted a comprehensive analysis of options data, revealing a surge in bullish bets on Bitcoin (BTC). These options, known as call options, will only pay off if Bitcoin reaches or exceeds $100,000 by September.
According to Wintermute's findings, the surge in call options activity is driven by several factors. One key catalyst is the perceived ability of Bitcoin to maintain its price above $60,000, which has led to a decline in short-selling activity.
"The fact that Bitcoin has been able to hold steady at or above $60,000 is a positive sign that is encouraging bullish sentiment," said Jake Ostrovskis, an over-the-counter trader at Wintermute.
Another contributing factor to the optimism is the launch of Runes, a Bitcoin token protocol that simplifies the interaction with Bitcoin-native tokens, including memecoins. Bartosz Lipiński, CEO of the crypto exchange Cube, views Runes as a potential catalyst for a price surge.
"How much Bitcoin bulls can drive up the price is anyone's guess, but I believe that Runes has the potential to be a major factor," said Lipiński. "Early indications are promising."
The analysis by Wintermute also highlights the significant activity in bullish options contracts expiring in December and March 2023. These contracts represent approximately $6.3 billion worth of Bitcoin, with over two-thirds being bullish.
Traders have also allocated an additional $3.3 billion in bullish bets for options expiring on June 28, which will pay off if Bitcoin reaches $75,000. This further underscores the widespread optimism among traders.
Amidst concerns about macroeconomic factors and a post-halving sell-off, Lipiński believes that buyers are returning to the market. He observed a "good amount of demand" during recent price dips, with traders purchasing $1.2 billion worth of Bitcoin.
"Bargain hunters are capitalizing on lower prices to accumulate satoshis," said Lipiński.
Ostrovskis confirms this trend, noting "significant spot buying across the board" through over-the-counter desks.
While the overall Bitcoin market has experienced a slight decline in the last 24 hours, trading at $64,710, the options data suggests a strong undercurrent of optimism among traders. The surge in bullish bets indicates a belief that Bitcoin is well-positioned for a significant price rally in the coming months.
