OKX Wallet Transaction Backlogs Cripple Bitcoin Network, Cause Memory Usage Lag

Recent activity has seen the Bitcoin network experience severe congestion as a result of OKX wallet transaction backlogs, leading to a lag in memory usage.

A recent X post by @mononautical highlighted the presence of close to 1,000 unconfirmed transactions on the OKX network. The post noted that the unconfirmed transactions represent more than 42 million virtual bytes and a fee rise totaling 57 BTC.

OKX’s Fee Surge

The mempool, which is a pool of unconfirmed Bitcoin transactions, has been experiencing congestion for several days. The backlog of transactions has caused the mempool to reach a size of 1.35 gigabytes, which is the largest it has been since November 2017.

As a result of the congestion, Bitcoin transaction fees have surged to an average of 520 satoshis per virtual byte (sats/vbyte). This means that the average transaction now costs around $52 to complete.

The high transaction fees are being caused by OKX’s operations in processing user wallet transactions. The platform began processing the transactions with block 846,867. Since then, OKX has handled over 2,380 transactions, with an average fee rate of 246.65 sats/vbyte.

Based on Bitcoin’s (BTC) current price of $69,270.00, the net cost of this process has amounted to 254.28 BTC, or roughly $17.6 million. Thus, the present network congestion level can be attributed to this enormous transaction volume.

Bitcoin’s Flapping Ecosystem

An automated mechanism that is largely ineffective is to blame for this network congestion, with internal bidding wars driving up the network’s costs. Another factor contributing to the surge in transaction costs is the profitability of miners.

Miners’ profitability has been severely impacted by the recent halving event, which reduced block rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. Thus, it is no surprise that mining activity has decreased, resulting in the most significant daily dip in hash rate since November 2017.

Power disruptions at major Chinese mining centers have further complicated these challenges. These power outages have slowed transaction processing speeds and increased competition for block space. Combining these elements has driven up transaction costs and slowed the Bitcoin transaction processing rate.
