Jan 06, 2026 at 10:35 pm

The Muscogee Creek National Council inaugurated its 24th Session, welcoming new representatives and electing key leadership positions. The ceremony highlighted a mix of returning and fresh faces, setting the stage for the council's upcoming legislative agenda.

National Council Welcomes New Representatives at 24th Session Inauguration

OKMULGEE – The Mound Building was the scene of significant political transition on Saturday, January 3rd, as the Muscogee Creek National Council convened for the inauguration of its 24th Session. The ceremony officially welcomed eleven returning representatives and five newly-elected members, marking a fresh chapter for the council. This pivotal event also saw the election of crucial officer positions, including speaker, second speaker, and sergeant-at-arms, with Muscogee Creek Supreme Court Justice Jessica Stomski presiding over the oaths.

New Faces, Renewed Purpose

The influx of new representatives promises to bring diverse perspectives and renewed energy to the council's deliberations. Among the newly elected are Cody Phillips (Creek District Seat B), James Factor (Kowetv District Seat B), Lora Harjo-King (Mvskoke District Seat B), William Lowe (Okmulke District Seat B), and Lucian Tiger III (Tvlse District Seat B). Notably, both Representative Lowe and Representative Tiger bring prior experience to the council, having served in previous terms, which is expected to ease their transition and allow them to contribute immediately.

Leadership Elections: A Close Contest

The election of council leadership proved to be a nail-biting affair, showcasing the nuanced dynamics within the National Council. In a closely watched contest for Speaker, the incumbent Randall Hicks faced a challenge from newly elected Representative Lucian Tiger III. Both the first and second votes resulted in an unexpected 8-8 tie, necessitating a coin toss – a traditional method for breaking such deadlocks. With 'heads' called by Rep. Tiger and 'tails' by Speaker Hicks, the coin landed on heads, securing Speaker Hicks' re-election. Similarly, the race for Second Speaker saw incumbent Thomasene Yahola Osborn pitted against newly elected Representative William Lowe. After two tied votes, a coin toss ultimately resulted in tails, re-electing Second Speaker Osborn.

Representative Robert Hufft ran unopposed for the position of sergeant-at-arms and was elected by acclamation with a unanimous 16-0 vote. Following these key elections, the National Council unanimously adopted its rules of procedure with a 15-0 vote, paving the way for productive legislative sessions.

Looking Ahead

The newly constituted National Council is set to convene for a Special Session on Tuesday, January 6th, at 6 p.m. The primary agenda items for this session include establishing the schedule for the 2026 legislative year and electing committee officers. The successful inauguration and leadership elections set a positive and engaging tone for the 24th Session, hinting at a dynamic and productive period ahead for the Muscogee Creek Nation.
