Mike Johnson on Sunday brushed off concerns over Trump's recent meme coin dinner.

May 26, 2025 at 04:13 am

Johnson told CNN he didn't know details about the dinner but said Trump was transparent. "He has nothing to hide, and he's out there trying to advance America's interests," Johnson said.

Mike Johnson on Sunday brushed off concerns over Trump's recent meme coin dinner.

A group of Senate Democrats are growing increasingly concerned with President Donald Trump's crypto ventures, especially the private dinner he had with the top 220 investors in January for his new meme coin.

The president's crypto activities, which also include launching his own meme coin in January, have led to worries among some lawmakers about potential conflicts of interest and whether attendees were trying to influence Trump on cryptocurrency policy.

These concerns come amid a broader push by a group of Democratic senators, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Mark Warner, for greater ethics standards in government, which they recently succeeded in advancing with the passage of the GENIUS Act by the House of Representatives last Thursday.

The senators, in a letter to Trump last month, expressed their observations of "numerous reports" regarding the president's private dinner at Mar-a-Lago with the meme coin investors shortly after the coin's launch.

According to reports, the investor group, known as Trump Digital Coins members, paid $1,000 to attend the dinner and had the opportunity to mingle with Trump, take photos, and listen to a speech by Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr.

The investor group was largely composed of crypto enthusiasts who had invested in Trump Digital Coins, a meme coin launched by Trump in February.

In their letter, the senators said they were concerned about the potential implications of the private dinner, considering Trump's role in setting economic and financial policy for the U.S.

"We are writing to express our concerns, which are heightened given the president's broad economic and financial policymaking powers and the potential for foreign adversaries to attempt to interfere in U.S. political and economic affairs," part of the letter read.

"We urge you to provide the American people with full transparency by disclosing the names of the individuals who attended the dinner, the topics that were discussed, and any foreign nationals who were present."

The senators also raised concerns about the lack of disclosure regarding the list of attendees at the meme coin dinner.

"We are also concerned by reports that the guests at the dinner were largely composed of U.S. citizens, despite the meme coin being sold internationally and advertised in multiple languages," they said.

"We note that several foreign nationals participated in the meme coin launch and that the meme coin is being sold in China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, India, and other countries around the world."

The senators said they were particularly interested in learning more about any foreign nationals who attended the dinner and had the opportunity to interact with Trump.

"We are concerned that foreign governments or individuals may be attempting to exert undue influence over U.S. economic and financial policy through their investments in meme coins or other cryptocurrencies," they said.

The senators went on to highlight the importance of maintaining public trust in government officials and the need for complete transparency, especially when it comes to any interactions with foreign governments or individuals.

"The American people deserve to know if any foreign nationals were present at the dinner and had the opportunity to engage with the president," they said.

"We are hopeful that you will cooperate fully with our request for information and provide the necessary details about the meme coin dinner and any other meetings or communications with meme coin investors."

The senators concluded by saying that they looked forward to receiving Trump's response by May 26.
