Microsoft Asks Shareholders to Vote on Whether to Consider Investing in Bitcoin

Oct 25, 2024 at 09:01 pm

Shareholders will vote on the Bitcoin report soon. If they listen to Microsoft's advice, they'll vote "no," and there won't be a report.

Microsoft Asks Shareholders to Vote on Whether to Consider Investing in Bitcoin

Microsoft is asking its shareholders to vote on whether or not they want the company to consider investing in Bitcoin. The request comes as the world's largest cryptocurrency has soared in value, piquing the interest of institutional investors.

In a recent SEC filing, Microsoft said that some of its shareholders have requested a special report on the company's potential investment in Bitcoin. However, Microsoft's management is recommending that shareholders vote against the proposal.

"The company's managers are already thinking about the idea of Bitcoin and have it covered," the filing reads. "In their view, an extra report on Bitcoin investing would just be doubling up on work."

According to the filing, Microsoft's team is "on the ball" when it comes to looking at new technologies like Bitcoin. They regularly check out whether or not new tools, like digital money, would be good for the company and its future.

"Microsoft believes that by creating this extra report, they'd be spending time and resources on something they've already got a good handle on," the filing continues. "This is Microsoft's way of telling shareholders, 'Trust us, we've got this under control.'"

The filing also notes that MicroStrategy, a technology company that holds Bitcoin on its balance sheet, has outperformed Microsoft stock by 313% this year. Despite doing only a fraction of the business that Microsoft has.

Shareholders will vote on the Bitcoin report soon. If they listen to Microsoft's advice, they'll vote "no," and there won't be a report. However, if enough people feel strongly about it, they could still push for it. Microsoft says they're already carefully thinking about Bitcoin and other digital money, even without this report.
