Jun 12, 2025 at 07:36 am

In a tribute to the much-loved cookbook that has shaped generations of family celebrations since it was first published in 1980, the Mint has released a special limited-edition coin collection honouring 12 of the book's most iconic cakes.

Are Media, Australia’s leading omnichannel content company for women and the publisher of The Australian Women’s Weekly, has partnered with the Royal Australian Mint and newsXpress to mark the 45th anniversary of one of the nation’s most treasured cultural touchstones: The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book.

In a tribute to the much-loved cookbook that has shaped generations of family celebrations since it was first published in 1980, the Mint has released a special limited-edition coin collection honouring 12 of the book’s most iconic cakes. From the jelly-filled swimming pool to the unforgettable choo-choo train and the iconic rubber ducky duck cake, each coin captures the magic, creativity and memories synonymous with The Weekly’s impact on Australian childhoods.

Sophie Tedmanson, editor of The Australian Women’s Weekly said: "The Children's Birthday Cake Book is part of Australia's collective memory - it brings people together, sparks joy and celebrates the love and effort that goes into making something special. We're honoured to collaborate with the Royal Australian Mint on a collection that pays tribute to the playful, heartfelt spirit that has defined The Weekly for more than 90 years. It's a beautiful reminder of our legacy and the role we continue to play in the lives of Australian families. The partnership between The Weekly and the Mint is a testament to the enduring power of trusted brands. As the leading voice for Australian women across generations, The Weekly continues to evolve while remaining deeply connected to its audience through shared stories, traditions, and culture."

The Weekly’s broader campaign runs from May to August and will also include a multi-platform influencer series launching on TikTok, featuring household names like Edwina Bartholomew, Jessica Rowe and Julie Goodwin sharing their fondest memories of growing up with the book and recreating their favourite cakes.

Are Media, general manager lifestyle and homes, Jocelin Abbey, said: "Few books have such a lasting emotional connection to Australians as The Australian Women's Weekly Children's Birthday Cake Book. This partnership brings to life its cultural impact, reimagining how these beloved stories can live on in new and creative ways. It is a fabulous demonstration of our mission at Are Media - to engage, inform and inspire women."

Royal Australian Mint acting chief executive officer Emily Martin said: "This coin series is a tribute that spans generations. Whether you're a child of the 1980s or beyond, or a collector, you'll really get the sense of fun this coin collection brings to mind."

newsXpress managing director Mark Fletcher said: "We are thrilled to be celebrating this iconic book that is dear to the hearts of so many Australians."

The 2025 coin series includes 11 $1 coins and one $2 coloured coin available in a range of collectible formats, from a proof coin inserted into a commemorative hardcover edition of The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book, to a 12-coin recipe card collection. The coins will be available from participating newsXpress stores, the Mint’s online store, and through select distributors.
