MakerDAO's governance token, MKR, surged to a near one-year high after the introduction of a token buyback program. The program removes MKR supply from the market using excess DAI stablecoins, reducing supply by 0.7% per month at current prices. MKR's market capitalization is around $1 billion, and the buyback is projected to purchase $7 million worth of tokens in the next month.

MakerDAO's Token Buyback Propels MKR to One-Year High
New York, August 26, 2023 - Maker (MKR), the governance token of the $5.3 billion decentralized finance (DeFi) lender MakerDAO, has surged to near its one-year high price following the introduction of a token buyback program. On Friday, MKR briefly breached the $1,200 mark for the first time since August 2022 before retreating slightly to trade around $1,148. Over the past week, the token has rallied by 28%, significantly outperforming the broader crypto market, which has witnessed a 4.6% decline, as measured by the CoinDesk Market Index.
This price surge coincides with the activation of MakerDAO's token buyback scheme on Wednesday. This program aims to reduce the MKR supply in circulation by periodically allocating excess DAI stablecoins from Maker's surplus buffer to purchase MKR from a UniSwap pool, as detailed in a governance proposal.
Deployed earlier this month, the buyback program became operational on Wednesday after the surplus buffer exceeded $50 million. According to blockchain data from Etherscan, the protocol has repurchased approximately $230,000 worth of MKR in the last 24 hours. At this rate, the protocol is projected to acquire roughly $7 million in tokens over the next month.
Considering MKR's total market capitalization of approximately $1 billion, the buyback program could potentially reduce the token's supply by 0.7% per month at current prices.
MakerDAO, one of the largest and most established DeFi lending protocols, is also the issuer of the $4.6 billion DAI stablecoin. Governed by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), MKR holders exercise voting rights on governance proposals.
In recent times, MakerDAO has expanded its revenue-generating strategies by investing DAI's reserve assets in traditional investment products such as bank loans and government bonds. Additionally, MakerDAO is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul that encompasses upgrades to the DAI and MKR tokens. The protocol's structure is also being restructured into smaller, autonomous organizations known as SubDAOs, which may issue their own tokens in the future.
