LayerZero Bans Employees from Airdrop Over Ethics Concerns
May 07, 2024 at 04:08 pm
LayerZero Labs co-founder Bryan Pellegrino has confirmed that LayerZero Labs employees will not qualify for the upcoming LayerZero airdrop and will be prohibited from claiming any airdropped tokens. Pellegrino, who is also the CEO of LayerZero Labs, tweeted, "Will announce something publicly about this, every LayerZero labs employee is 100% restricted from claiming and has no eligibility — it will be a fireable offense and has been announced internally for some time and has always been the case."

LayerZero Co-Founder Bans Employees from Participating in Upcoming Airdrop, Citing Ethical Concerns
San Francisco, CA - May 7, 2024 - LayerZero co-founder Bryan Pellegrino has announced that employees of LayerZero Labs will be ineligible to participate in the project's upcoming airdrop, due to ethical concerns.
Pellegrino, who is also CEO of LayerZero Labs, confirmed the decision on Twitter, stating:
"Will announce something publicly about this, every LayerZero labs employee is 100% restricted from claiming and has no eligibility - it will be a fireable offense and has been announced internally for some time and has always been the case."
The move comes amidst anticipation for LayerZero's airdrop, which is expected to distribute tokens to eligible community members. However, Pellegrino has made it clear that LayerZero employees will not be among the recipients.
"If detected, this will be a fireable offense. This has been announced internally for some time and has always been the case," he added.
When asked about the possibility of employees being allocated LayerZero tokens if they hold NFT collections such as Pudgy Penguins, Pellegrino confirmed that "they won't be receiving the airdrop."
The decision has been met with mixed reactions from the community. Some have expressed support for Pellegrino's stance, arguing that it promotes fairness and prevents potential conflicts of interest. Others have questioned the necessity of such a strict policy, suggesting that employees who contribute to the project's success should be eligible for rewards.
LayerZero is an omnichain interoperability protocol that enables decentralized applications (dApps) to seamlessly interact across different blockchains. This interoperability is achieved through a unique messaging layer that facilitates cross-chain communication.
On May 2, LayerZero's official Twitter account announced that it had taken a snapshot for its airdrop. Specific eligibility criteria have not yet been released, but the community expects them to include factors such as transaction volume, number of chains interacted with, and more.
LayerZero has also conducted an extensive Sybil attack mitigation effort, requiring Sybil entities to "self-dox" in exchange for 15% of their projected airdrop allocation. Those who fail to comply risk disqualification from the airdrop entirely and potential public exposure of their wallet addresses.
Pellegrino's decision to restrict employee participation in the airdrop highlights the ethical considerations that arise in the emerging world of decentralized finance. As more projects adopt community-driven distribution models, the need for clear and impartial allocation mechanisms becomes increasingly important.
