Layer-3 Networks: Boon or Bane for Ethereum's Future?
Apr 01, 2024 at 08:08 pm
The emergence of Layer-3 (L3) networks on top of existing Layer-2 (L2) protocols has sparked controversy within the Ethereum community. While some argue that L3s offer specialized functionality and facilitate scaling, others contend that they diminish Ethereum's value and compromise its security. Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron expresses skepticism towards L3s, believing they detract from the ecosystem by siphoning value away from Ethereum and onto the underlying L2s.

Layer-3 Networks: A Threat to Ethereum's Value or a Catalyst for Innovation?
The Ethereum ecosystem is undergoing a transformation, with the emergence of layer-3 (L3) networks sparking a heated debate within the cryptocurrency community. These innovative solutions, built atop layer-2 (L2) networks, have raised questions about their impact on Ethereum's value and the future of blockchain scaling.
Polygon Labs CEO's Controversial Stance
Marc Boiron, CEO of Polygon Labs, a leading L2 scaling network, has expressed his disapproval of L3 networks. In a recent blog post, he argued that L3s "exist only to take value away from Ethereum and onto the L2s on which the L3s are built." Boiron claims that L3s are unnecessary for scaling existing networks and that they could compromise Ethereum's security and overall value.
"I'll say the quiet part out loud: L3s exist only to take value away from Ethereum and onto the L2s on which the L3s are built," wrote Boiron. "You do not need L3s to scale."
Boiron's comments have ignited a fiery debate, with proponents and detractors alike weighing in on the merits of L3 networks.
The Benefits of L3 Networks
Supporters of L3 networks argue that they offer several advantages that L2s cannot provide. Peter Haymond, senior partnership manager at Offchain Labs, highlighted the cost-effectiveness of native bridging from L2 rather than L1, the affordability of proving on-chain, the use of custom gas tokens, and specialized state transition functions as key benefits of L3s.
Arbitrum Foundation researcher Patrick McCorry expressed surprise at Boiron's viewpoint, emphasizing the significant advantages offered by L3s, particularly their ability to enable L2s to evolve into settlement layers. This, McCorry argues, reduces the cost of executing bridges and allows Ethereum to serve as a global ordering service and final arbiter of settlements.
Vitalik Buterin's Perspective
The debate over L3 networks was initially sparked by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in late 2022. Buterin acknowledged the potential value of L3s, but emphasized that they should offer unique functions not provided by L2s.
"A third layer on the blockchain would only be justified if it introduced unique functions not provided by layer-2s," Buterin wrote.
The Future of L3 Networks
Despite the debate and differing opinions, the L3 ecosystem continues to grow and evolve. Orbs, zkSync Hyperchains, Xai, and Degen Chain are among the leading players in this emerging space. However, the sector remains relatively small, with only four L3 tokens currently listed on CoinGecko.
Whether or not L3 networks will ultimately detract from Ethereum's value remains to be seen. The ongoing debate highlights the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the blockchain industry. As the technology matures and new applications are developed, the role of L3 networks within the Ethereum ecosystem will undoubtedly continue to be a topic of discussion and debate.
