Jose Mourinho flips a coin to pick his Fenerbahce starting XI

Jose Mourinho flips a coin to pick his Fenerbahce starting XI

We've grown used to Jose Mourinho's press conferences rarely sticking to the script. Since his first stint at Chelsea, he's continued to polarize public opinion—and he seems to enjoy it more than most.

His latest colorful moment came after Fenerbahce's 4–1 victory over Basaksehir. One journalist questioned Mourinho’s starting XI choices—a hot topic in Turkey recently. Unsurprisingly, the Special One didn't take kindly to the question and delivered a typically sarcastic response to draw attention back to himself.

"I have 25 coins with my players’ faces on them, and I just do this" (he mimicked flipping coins in the air). "The 11 that land on the table, they play. The rest sit on the bench. During the week, I have fun, I go clubbing around Istanbul, and when it’s time to pick the team—it’s that simple," Mourinho said.

This isn’t the first time he's engaged Turkish journalists in such a way. Some find him amusing, others call him arrogant and rude. After a Europa League loss to Rangers, Mourinho famously pretended to fall asleep while a reporter asked a question. "This is too much for my brain, man. I’m tired. After everything tonight, this is just too much," he snapped.

Still, no amount of theatrics can mask the reality: Fenerbahce is heading for yet another season without silverware—a major failure considering the financial investment and player acquisitions made. True to form, Mourinho refuses to accept blame for poor results, instead pointing fingers at refereeing decisions, conspiracies, or the coaching staff of opponents. But when his team wins, he’s quick to boast about the coaching staff's flawless game plan.

It’s this mindset that has seen his managerial career spiral downward over the past nine years. Sure, his coin-flipping comment was a joke—but if he truly picked teams that way, it’s unlikely the outcomes would be much different.
