Ethereum Just Made a Bold Move That Shows It's Thinking Way, Way Ahead
May 15, 2025 at 11:01 am
The Ethereum Foundation has announced its “Trillion Dollar Security” initiative, or 1TS for short, and the name pretty much says it all.

The Ethereum Foundation has announced its "Trillion Dollar Security" initiative, or 1TS for short. The goal is to prepare Ethereum for handling the kind of money volume and user activity that today’s traditional financial systems deal with. It's a new stage in Ethereum's journey toward large-scale institutional readiness.
While patching bugs and upgrading smart contracts are part of the effort, the broader aim is to make sure the entire blockchain fabric can handle the sustained pressure of billions of users.
The Foundation is thinking long-term. They're imagining a future where Ethereum isn't just for DeFi pros and NFT collectors. It's for everyone, and every dollar.
Announcing the Trillion Dollar Security (1TS) initiative: an ecosystem-wide effort to upgrade Ethereum's security to help bring the world onchain.

Picture billions of users, each holding $1,000 on-chain. Or one smart contract moving $1 trillion like it’s nothing. That kind of scale demands serious security.
The 1TS roadmap is split into three parts, and it's not just for developers, it's meant to pull in the entire Ethereum community. It will focus on:
The architecture of the blockchain itself to sustain large-scale activity.
The role of tooling and best practices for building on Ethereum in a way that's sufficiently secure for handling large amounts of money.
The socio-economic aspect of engaging the community in discovering and patching vulnerabilities.
Those interested can follow the progress on the dedicated 1TS website.
The initiative is being led by Fredrik Svantes, who handles protocol security at the Ethereum Foundation, and Josh Stark from the leadership team. They’ve brought in a heavyweight crew too — including Samczsun from Paradigm, Mehdi Zerouali of Sigma Prime, and Zach Obront, co-founder of Etherealize.
If you’ve followed Ethereum security for a while, you’ll recognize those names. These folks don’t play around.
Why Now?
Ethereum has been hit with a variety of crypto scams and hacks over the years. From DeFi rug pulls and bridge hacks to wallet bugs and phishing scams, the network has seen its fair share of turbulence.
The 1TS initiative is a direct response to those challenges. It's about getting ahead of future problems before they cause real damage.
The "1TS" moniker stands for "Trillion Dollar Security," alluding to the vast scale at which the crypto is aiming to operate. In a blog post announcing the initiative, the Ethereum Foundation noted that to reach the "full potential" of blockchain technology, it needs to process the same levels of money volume and user activity that today’s traditional financial systems do.
This new Ethereum security initiative is also the latest sign of a shift toward large-scale institutional readiness.
