DAO Maker Faces Backlash: Uncompensated Victims Seek Closure from 2021 Hack

Apr 25, 2024 at 05:43 pm

DAO Maker, a Web3-focused crypto fundraising platform, plans to raise substantial funds in 2024. However, the platform faces scrutiny over a 2021 hack that resulted in $7 million in losses. Victims of the hack allege that they have not received adequate compensation despite initial promises from the development team. DAO Maker's handling of the situation, including the alleged manipulation of a governance vote to cancel the promised redemption process, adds to the controversy.

DAO Maker Controversy: Uncompensated Victims of 2021 Hack Seek Closure

Executive Summary:

DAO Maker, a prominent cryptocurrency fundraising platform, is facing scrutiny amidst allegations of mishandling a 2021 hack that resulted in approximately $7 million in losses. Victims claim they have not received full compensation despite promises from the development team.

Incident Overview:

In August 2021, DAO Maker experienced a security breach due to a compromised private key, allegedly caused by developer negligence. The incident resulted in a loss of approximately $7 million worth of assets.

Initial Response and Compensation:

DAO Maker initially responded by distributing 500 USD Coin per affected user. It also promised further compensation through a new IOU token, USDR, redeemable within a year for the platform's native DAO token at enhanced rates.

Failed Redemption and Governance Vote:

However, victims allege that they were unable to redeem their USDR tokens. They claim that a governance vote, influenced by DAO Maker's substantial token holdings, canceled the redemption process.

DeFi Researcher's Allegations:

A decentralized finance (DeFi) researcher from SOMA Analytics has reported that DAO Maker may have manipulated the governance vote to abandon the USDR redemption. The researcher also alleges that DAO Maker attempted to erase evidence of this decision.

Unresolved Compensation and Token Value:

As a result, victims of the hack remain uncompensated, and the USDR token has become virtually worthless, with no active market or exchange possibilities.

Victim Testimonies:

One investor, known as "Red Drac," received 500 USDT immediately after the hack and 1,500 USDR later. However, they were unable to redeem or sell the tokens at full value. They discovered a liquidity pool offering USDR tokens at a significant discount but chose not to sell.

Another affected user, "Zztelecom," also experienced difficulties redeeming USDR. They purchased the tokens at a discount, hoping for future gains that never materialized.

Governance Manipulation Allegations:

SOMA Analytics alleges that a specific proposal on the DAO Maker platform to adjust the USDR redemption terms was passed by only six wallets, suggesting potential manipulation. The proposal reduced the redemption value of USDR significantly, contradicting earlier commitments.

Current Status:

Despite the DAO vote favoring a 50% redemption rate, no compensation has been distributed. The tokens have been made unredeemable for anything other than DAO Power on the platform, effectively rendering them useless in the secondary market.

Outstanding Concerns:

The ongoing issues from the hack raise concerns about governance and compensation practices within the DAO Maker platform. Victims of the hack demand a fair resolution and compensation for their losses.

DAO Maker's Response:

Cointelegraph's inquiries to DAO Maker for comments remained unanswered at the time of publication.
