Coinbase Will Officially Join the S&P 500 Next Week, Cementing Its Status Among Large-Cap Names

Major US stock index is set to welcome its first crypto-focused exchange next week. Coinbase will officially join the S&P 500 ahead of trading on May 19.

The move comes more than three years after its direct listing on Nasdaq, and it cements the firm’s status among large-cap names. It also follows the company meeting strict rules—positive earnings in the most recent quarter and across the prior four quarters.

This is no small feat for a business whose fortunes have swung wildly with Bitcoin and Ether prices.

Coinbase is replacing Discover Financial Services in the benchmark before markets open on Monday, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices.

Coinbase stock jumped more than 10% in extended trading on Monday. Index funds tracking the S&P 500 will be adding the exchange to their portfolios.

Investors have poured into the stock, helping to triple its value over the past two years. However, it is down nearly 17% so far this year, while Bitcoin has climbed close to 10%.

Coinbase just became the first and only crypto company to join the S&P 500.

This milestone represents what the true believers, from retail investors to institutional investors to our employees and partners, knew all along.

Coinbase is planning to acquire Deribit for $2.9 billion, in one of the largest deals in crypto history. The purchase would bring options trading into its suite of products and boost revenue potential.

At the same time, it adds integration risks and debt service that investors will be watching closely as the exchange tries to navigate the volatile world of digital assets.

The inclusion signals growing acceptance of digital assets by traditional finance. Regulators have taken a more permissive stance toward crypto firms, especially under the current administration.

Rival exchanges, such as Gemini and Kraken, are already eyeing their own public listings. However, volatility in token prices could still send Coinbase’s earnings swinging, which in turn could affect its standing in the S&P 500.

The S&P 500 is a widely-tracked stock market index that measures the collective performance of 500 large, publicly traded companies in the United States, covering a broad spectrum of sectors in the economy. It is a part of the overall stock market and is used by investors to assess the health of the US economy. The index is maintained and calculated by the Standard & Poor's Global, a subsidiary of McGraw Hill.

The index's history can be traced back to 1923, when the Standard Statistics Company began compiling an index of 90 common stocks, which later became the basis for the S&P 500. In 1957, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) began calculating and publishing the S&P 500 index.

The S&P 500 is a weighted index, with each stock's weighting determined by its market capitalization. The index is also adjusted periodically to reflect changes in the underlying companies, such as mergers, acquisitions, and bankruptcies.

The S&P 500 is one of the most widely recognized and used stock market indices in the world. It is a key benchmark for US equity markets and is often used by investors to track the overall health of the economy. The index is also a component of several popular investment products, such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds.

The S&P 500 is an important indicator of market trends and investor sentiment. When the index rises, it is generally seen as a sign that the economy is strong and investors are optimistic about the future. Conversely, when the index falls, it can be an indication of economic weakness or investor pessimism.

The S&P 500 is a valuable resource for investors who are interested in making informed investment decisions. By tracking the index and understanding its components, investors can gain valuable insights into the current state of the market and make more informed investment choices. It plays a crucial role in the financial markets and provides valuable information for investors and economists.

As Coinbase prepares for its S&P 500 debut, investors will be closely watching how the company handles the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in this new chapter. Its performance will be a bellwether for the broader crypto sector's integration into traditional finance. Nonetheless, Coinbase's journey to the S&P 500 is a testament to the rapid evolution of the crypto industry and its increasing relevance in the global financial landscape.
