Coinbase Forecasts a Hit of $180M to $400M from Cyber Attack
May 16, 2025 at 12:09 am
Coinbase COIN.O forecast a hit of $180 million to $400 million from a cyber attack that breached account data of a "small subset" of its customers

Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) shares fell nearly 3% on Thursday after the company forecast a hit of $180 million to $400 million from a cyber attack that breached account data of a "small subset" of its customers.
The company received an email from an unknown threat actor on May 11, claiming to have information about certain customer accounts as well as internal documents.
While some data, including names, addresses and emails was stolen, the hackers did not get access to login credentials or passwords, Coinbase said. It will, however, reimburse customers who were tricked by the attackers into sending them funds.
The disclosure comes days before the company is set to join the benchmark S&P 500 index (SPX), marking a landmark moment for the crypto industry.
Coinbase said hackers had paid multiple contractors and employees working in support roles outside the U.S. to collect information. It has since terminated the employment of those involved.
"This may push the industry to adopt stricter employee vetting and introduce some reputational risks," said Bo Pei, analyst at U.S. Tiger Securities.
Coinbase is known for its strong cybersecurity posture and has been actively investing in new technologies and talent to further enhance its capabilities.
The company’s shares have lost nearly two-thirds of their value since the beginning of 2022 as crypto prices flounder and the outlook for the industry remains uncertain.
Coinbase is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, and it provides a platform for buying, selling, and trading cryptocurrencies. The company also offers a variety of other services, such as institutional custody solutions and a suite of Web3 products.
Coinbase is a major player in the rapidly growing crypto industry. The company is also a key part of the U.S. financial system, and its products and services are used by millions of people around the world.
Despite the challenges posed by cyberattacks, the crypto industry is making progress in tackling this threat. Several leading exchanges have invested heavily in cybersecurity and are working closely with governments and law enforcement agencies to combat cybercrime.
As the crypto industry continues to grow and evolve, it is likely that we will see even more sophisticated cyberattacks. However, the industry is resilient and will continue to adapt to these threats.
