Breaking: Banks in Asia, North America, and Europe to Execute Live Digital Asset, Currency Transfers via SWIFT

In a significant development, banks across Asia, North America, and Europe are preparing to execute live transactions using the SWIFT network for the transfer of digital assets and currencies. This marks a crucial step toward the broader mainstream adoption of digital currencies and assets.

The news comes as part of a broader initiative by SWIFT, in collaboration with enterprise blockchain firm R3, to integrate blockchain technology into the existing messaging and payment infrastructure used by banks globally.

According to a recent report by Blockworks, banks in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are among those set to participate in the pilot program for digital asset transfers.

The pilot, which is expected to conclude by the end of 2024, will see banks using R3’s Corda blockchain platform to tokenize assets such as bonds, equities, and fiat currencies, and subsequently transferring them via the SWIFT network.

This development follows extensive testing and preparation by SWIFT over the past several years to integrate blockchain technology into its network.

In 2022, SWIFT conducted a successful pilot program involving over 40 banks and technology vendors to explore the use of blockchain for cross-border payments, liquidity management, and trade finance.

The integration of blockchain technology into SWIFT’s network is widely anticipated to enhance the efficiency, speed, and transparency of cross-border transactions involving digital assets and currencies.

Currently, the settlement of such transactions can take several days, but the use of blockchain technology is expected to reduce this time to a matter of hours or even minutes.

Moreover, the immutability and distributed nature of blockchain technology will provide an additional layer of security for these transactions, minimizing the risk of fraud or manipulation.

Overall, the move by banks to execute live digital asset and currency transfers via SWIFT marks a significant milestone in the convergence of traditional finance and digital asset technology.

This development is likely to pave the way for broader mainstream adoption of digital currencies and assets, facilitating greater participation and liquidity in the digital asset market.
