Bitcoin Transaction Fees Settle Down After Runes Protocol Surge
May 03, 2024 at 11:03 pm
Following the brief surge in Bitcoin transaction fees caused by the launch of Runes, the fees have returned to normal levels. Runes' daily transaction count has plummeted by 97.5%, resulting in an 81.3% drop in its share of Bitcoin's on-chain activity. This decline has alleviated congestion for ordinary Bitcoin users, causing average transaction fees to decrease by 97% to $3.60 since their all-time high of $128 on April 20.

Bitcoin Transaction Fees Normalize After Runes Protocol's Initial Surge
Amidst the recent hype surrounding the launch of Runes, a protocol that enables the creation of Bitcoin-based tokens, the cryptocurrency's transaction fees temporarily skyrocketed before settling back to normal levels.
According to data from Dune Analytics, Runes' daily transaction count experienced a drastic decline of 97.5%, falling from a peak of 753,584 on April 23 to approximately 19,000 as of today. This sharp decrease corresponds with a significant reduction in Runes' share of Bitcoin's on-chain activity, which has dropped from 81.3% to 30% over the same period.
With the decline in Runes activity, ordinary Bitcoin users have witnessed a notable respite. Average transaction fees on the network have plummeted by 97% since reaching an all-time high of $128 on April 20, coinciding with Runes' launch. Data from BitInfoCharts indicates that fees have now stabilized around $3.60, marking a substantial decrease from the peak.
Ryan Song, head of CoinWestern Ventures, a Bitcoin mining consultancy firm, attributes the initial surge in Bitcoin transaction fees to a flurry of token minting activities fueled by speculation surrounding Runes. "The Bitcoin network experienced a significant increase in load, primarily due to minting," Song explained. "A wave of minting operations, driven by heightened Runes speculation, placed extraordinary demands on the already constrained Bitcoin block space."
On April 29, Glassnode reported that over 53% of the $117 million generated in fee revenue by Runes was collected on its first day of operation. However, daily fee revenue plummeted to $1.03 million on April 28, representing a decline of 98% since the protocol's debut.
Runes, which launched on April 20, leverages Ordinals inscriptions to address the inefficiencies associated with the BRC-20 protocol, which introduced fungible token creation to Bitcoin in March 2023. While BRC-20 tokens gained popularity rapidly, they faced criticism for their data-intensive nature, exacerbating mempool congestion and pushing up Bitcoin transaction fees.
Despite the recent decline in Runes activity, the protocol has established a notable presence within the Bitcoin token ecosystem, accounting for approximately one-quarter of Bitcoin transactions on May 3. Runes commands an 81% share of Bitcoin token transactions, followed by BRC-20 tokens at 12% and Ordinals at 5.65%.
In summary, Bitcoin's transaction fees have returned to normal levels after a brief surge triggered by the launch of Runes. While Runes has secured a significant share of Bitcoin token activity, its initial impact on the network has subsided, providing relief to ordinary Bitcoin users. The future of Bitcoin tokens remains to be seen, but the current landscape indicates a healthy diversity of options for users to explore.
