Bitcoin Trades Below Cost Basis, Sparking Concerns and Volatility

May 02, 2024 at 11:01 am

Bitcoin (BTC) has dipped below the average purchase price for short-term holders, prompting concerns of "panic" due to unrealized losses. Analyst James Check warns that these buyers are prone to panic, while highlighting Bitcoin's recent 8% decline and marking its lowest price since February. Short-term holders, who have held BTC for under 155 days, are experiencing an average 3% unrealized loss due to the price drop. Despite a slight recovery, BTC's value has decreased by 4% in 24 hours, with $100.27 million in long positions liquidated.

Bitcoin Trades Below Cost Basis, Sparking Concerns and Volatility

In a concerning development that has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin (BTC) has plummeted below the average purchase price paid by short-term holders, triggering widespread apprehension and raising fears of a potential panic.

Analysts have expressed alarm over the recent price drop, citing the statistical likelihood that these recent buyers may panic in response to unrealized losses. James Check, an on-chain analyst known as "Checkmatey," has warned that this development could cause significant turmoil in the market.

"These recent buyers are statistically the most likely to panic," Check stated in a recent report.

The sharp decline in Bitcoin's price, which briefly plummeted 8% below a key support level to $56,814 on May 1, has raised concerns among short-term holders who have held their Bitcoin for less than 155 days. These holders paid an average price of $59,600 per Bitcoin, meaning they are currently facing an average unrealized loss of 3%.

Despite a slight recovery to $57,631 at the time of writing, short-term holders remain in a precarious position. Bitcoin's current price represents a decline of 4% over the past 24 hours, and the liquidation of $100.27 million in long positions during that time has further exacerbated the situation.

The price decline was triggered by a broad crypto sell-off as market participants anxiously awaited the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision, which ultimately left current high interest rates unchanged.

While acknowledging that holding an unrealized loss is far from ideal, Check has emphasized that short-term Bitcoin holders have faced similar challenges in the past and have ultimately recovered.

"Most importantly, breaking the [short-term holder] cost basis isn't the end of the world, nor the end of the bull market. It doesn't help…but it is and has been recoverable," he wrote.

The cost basis for short-term holders typically acts as a support level during bull periods and a resistance level during bear periods. However, crypto trading resource On-Chain College has identified several potential events that do not necessarily signal the end of the bull market.

According to On-Chain College, a "quick move" to $59,600, representing a 2.2% increase from Bitcoin's current price, would be a bullish sign. This scenario is based on a similar pattern observed in June 2023, when the price dipped below the cost basis but quickly rebounded, preceding a significant upswing.

On-Chain College also notes that Bitcoin's price remained volatile below the short-term cost basis for a period of time after a pullback in August 2023. This suggests that a "sustained period" below the cost basis could also indicate a bullish trend.
