Bitcoin Plunges 8.4% as Geopolitical Tensions Soar
Apr 16, 2024 at 02:01 am
On April 13, Bitcoin plummeted over 8.4% to $61,625, a $130 million market cap loss, after Iran's drone attack on Israel escalated geopolitical tensions. Other cryptocurrencies like Ether and Solana also suffered, with the global crypto market cap dropping by 8.19% to $2.23 trillion. The attack, in retaliation for Israel's airstrike in Syria, has heightened conflict, involving Iran's seizure of an Israeli billionaire's cargo ship.

Bitcoin Plummets 8.4% Amidst Heightened Geopolitical Tensions
On April 13, the cryptocurrency market experienced a significant downturn, with Bitcoin (BTC) leading the decline. The price of BTC plummeted by over 8.4%, falling from approximately $67,000 to $61,625 within minutes of news of Iran's attack on Israel. This sharp drop wiped out over $130 million in market capitalization.
The decline was not isolated to Bitcoin. Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, also witnessed a significant drop of 9.81%, falling to a price of $2,927. Solana (SOL) experienced a substantial decline of 15.96%, bringing its price down to $129. According to data from CoinMarketCap, the global cryptocurrency market capitalization fell by 8.19% to $2.23 trillion.
The downturn was triggered by heightened geopolitical tensions after Iran launched drone strikes towards Israel in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on a diplomatic facility in Damascus, Syria. The earlier strike resulted in the deaths of seven Iranians, including two generals. The incident escalated the conflict, and Iran seized a cargo ship owned by an Israeli billionaire.
US President Joe Biden further intensified the situation on April 12 with a warning about potential imminent attacks by Iran. President Biden assured support for Israel, stating, "We are devoted to the defense of Israel. We will support Israel, we will help defend Israel, and Iran will not succeed." These remarks underscored the US commitment to aiding Israel amidst the escalating tensions.
The friction between Iran and Israel marks a significant escalation in regional conflicts, following the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks by Hamas, which sparked ongoing confrontations between Israel and Hamas. The US has been actively attempting to mitigate further escalations.
US officials have advised Israel against escalating the situation further. A government source relayed to CNN the US administration's frustrations over the lack of prior notice from Israel about its planned airstrike. It was reported that Israel notified a US official of the airstrike only when its aircraft were already en route to Syria.
"We were not aware that Israel was going to carry out this airstrike in advance," the official stated. "Minutes before it happened and when Israeli planes were already in the air, Israel reached out to a US official to say they were in the process of conducting a strike in Syria. It did not include any details on who they were targeting or where it would be conducted, and the strike was already underway before word could be passed through the US government."
The escalation in geopolitical tensions has created uncertainty in the cryptocurrency market, leading to a sell-off of major cryptocurrencies. Investors are monitoring the situation closely, as further developments could continue to impact the market.
