Bitcoin Halving a Non-Event as Market Forces Take Precedence

Apr 22, 2024 at 11:08 pm

Bitcoin's recent "halving" event has had minimal impact on its price, as industry experts attribute the cryptocurrency's performance to broader financial market dynamics and geopolitical uncertainties. Despite some anticipation of a price surge similar to past halving events, Bitcoin has exhibited limited movement, with analysts noting its increasing correlation with traditional market sentiment and the waning influence of retail trading activity around the halving.

Bitcoin Halving a Non-Event as Market Forces Take Precedence

Bitcoin Unfazed by Halving Event, Market Sentiment Remains Paramount

London, United Kingdom - The highly anticipated "halving" event for Bitcoin, a significant change to its underlying technology, has had a negligible impact on its price, as industry experts emphasize the cryptocurrency's susceptibility to broader financial market trends and geopolitical events.

This "halving," which occurred on Saturday at approximately 0014 GMT, involves a reduction in the rate at which new Bitcoins are created. It occurs every four years, and some enthusiasts had anticipated a price surge, citing historical gains after previous halvings.

However, as of Monday afternoon, Bitcoin's price remained largely unchanged, hovering around $66,300. It had experienced a modest gain of 1.2% last week and a further 3.4% increase on Monday, but its broader movement has been characterized by indecision since reaching an all-time high of $73,794 last month.

"The geopolitical developments ongoing at the moment are exerting a greater influence than any impact from the halving. In particular, the perceived easing of tensions between Iran and Israel," remarked Mick Roche, senior trader at Zodia Markets, the cryptocurrency arm of Standard Chartered.

Global equity markets staged a recovery on Monday as investors retreated from defensive positions adopted due to fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East.

Eric Demuth, CEO of Bitpanda, an Austrian cryptocurrency exchange, observed that Bitcoin's correlation with broader market sentiment has intensified, and there is no discernible pattern of retail trading activity surrounding the halving.

"Cryptocurrencies have become increasingly akin to stocks. The individuals trading stocks and technology stocks are also engaged in cryptocurrency trading," he explained.

Excitement surrounding the potential regulatory approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States contributed to Bitcoin's rebound last year following a series of setbacks in 2022.

According to Ben Laidler, global markets strategist at eToro, the focus for Bitcoin now shifts towards "institutionalisation." While retail investors currently dominate Bitcoin, Laidler anticipates that future regulatory developments could facilitate the adoption of Bitcoin by companies, banks, and central banks.

Despite their recent surge, cryptocurrencies remain a niche asset class, with their combined value estimated at approximately $2.5 trillion by CoinGecko, a market tracker. Regulators continue to express caution, emphasizing their speculative nature, inherent risk, and limited practical applications.

The cryptocurrency market is also awaiting the US Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) decision on spot ETFs for Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency. However, both Demuth and Roche expressed skepticism that such approval would materialize in May, as had been previously anticipated.
