Bitcoin, Ethereum Rebound Before Massive Options Expiration

Apr 12, 2024 at 01:00 pm

Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) prices have rebounded slightly, but selling pressure persists as options worth $2.5 billion expire today. While BTC options with a notional value of $1.51 billion and ETH options valued at $0.81 billion are expiring, the put-call ratio for both suggests a continued trend of selling. Despite the approaching Bitcoin halving, volatility remains high due to subdued sentiment and macro headwinds.

Bitcoin, Ethereum Rebound Before Massive Options Expiration

Bitcoin and Ethereum Prices Rebound Amidst Selling Pressure Ahead of Massive Options Expiry

12th May, 2023 - The cryptocurrency market has witnessed a slight rebound in the prices of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) today, despite lingering selling pressure. This comes as nearly $2.5 billion worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum options are set to expire later today, adding to the market's volatility.

Traders have been pricing in muted upside momentum for both Bitcoin and Ethereum, factoring in headwinds such as macroeconomic uncertainties and whale selling. The buildup of adverse conditions, including this week's hotter-than-expected CPI data and a significant drop in derivatives market volumes, has further fueled selling sentiments in the crypto market.

Data from analytics platform Greekslive reveals that sell contracts have dominated trading activity this month, indicating a prevailing bearish outlook. The expectation of a significant market correction post-halving appears to be a factor driving this sentiment.

Bitcoin Options Set to Expire Today

Over 21,162 BTC options, representing a notional value of $1.51 billion, are scheduled to expire today. The put-call ratio stands at 0.62, suggesting a bias towards selling pressure. The max pain point for these options is currently at $69,000, indicating that Bitcoin's price is likely to remain under selling pressure in the near term.

Implied volatility (IV) has declined significantly across all major terms, which implies diminished expectations for volatile price movements. This suggests that Bitcoin's price could drop below $70,000 in the coming hours.

Ethereum Options Also Expiring

Meanwhile, 227,785 ETH options, with a notional value of nearly $0.81 billion, are set to expire today. The put-call ratio for these options is 0.49, indicating a slightly bullish outlook. However, the max pain point is currently at $3,425, below the current price of $3,535. This suggests that traders still see opportunities to short ETH in the near term.

BTC and ETH Futures Market Activity

BTC futures open interest has increased by 2% in the past four hours, but remains volatile in the last hour. CME BTC futures open interest has dropped by 1% in the past hour.

ETH futures open interest has declined by 2% in the past 24 hours but has risen by 1% in the past four hours. The futures trading activity for both BTC and ETH remains volatile ahead of the options expiry today.

Market Outlook

Experts anticipate that the crypto market will remain volatile leading up to and following Bitcoin's halving event. The buildup of adverse conditions, including selling sentiments due to hot CPI data and declining derivatives market volumes, is expected to continue to influence market behavior.

Traders are urged to monitor the trading volumes and sentiment surrounding Bitcoin's halving event closely. Selling medium-term could be a viable strategy due to the current market conditions, while short-term traders may find opportunities in the volatile price movements ahead of the options expiry.
