Bitcoin Dives Below $60k Amidst Risk-Aversion and Looming Fed Decision

May 01, 2024 at 04:09 pm

Bitcoin' plummeted 6.3% in the past 24 hours, plummeting below $60,000 on Tuesday, marking the cryptocurrency's biggest monthly loss since November 2022. The broader crypto market suffered as well, with Ethereum and other altcoins dropping. Amidst risk-off sentiment in financial markets and worries from the Federal Reserve's pending rate decision today, 10x Research projects additional selling pressure, predicting a price range of $52,000-$55,000.

Bitcoin Tumbles Below $60,000 Amidst Risk-Averse Sentiment and Imminent Fed Decision

The cryptocurrency market has witnessed a sharp decline in recent days, with Bitcoin (BTC) dropping below the crucial $60,000 support level. As of Wednesday morning, BTC hovered around $57,700, marking a 6.3% decline in the past 24 hours. This significant drop follows a disappointing April for Bitcoin, which recorded its first monthly loss since August.

The broader financial markets have been gripped by a risk-off sentiment as investors eagerly await the Federal Reserve's (Fed) interest rate decision and press conference later today. The Fed's decision will likely influence the direction of the cryptocurrency market, with expectations of another interest rate hike casting a shadow over riskier assets like Bitcoin.

The wider crypto market, as measured by the CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20), has also suffered losses, with almost 9% wiped out before some recovery was witnessed. Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, slipped below $3,000, while dogecoin (DOGE) led the decline among major altcoins with a 9% drop. Solana (SOL) and avalanche (AVAX) both lost around 6%.

Analysts have attributed the recent market weakness to several factors, including concerns about slower economic growth and persistent inflation in the U.S. This stagflationary environment has dampened hopes for an interest rate cut by the Fed, adding to the risk-averse sentiment.

Digital asset research firm 10x Research predicts further downside for Bitcoin, citing selling pressure towards the $52,000 level based on outflows from U.S. spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The firm estimates that the average entry price for U.S. Bitcoin ETF holders is $57,300, which could provide support, but below that level, further ETF unwinding could exacerbate the decline.

10x CEO Markus Thielen suggests that the market may have been inflated by short-term investors who pushed prices higher ahead of the Bitcoin halving on April 20th. With this event now behind us, he expects continued unwinding of ETF positions as average buyers find themselves underwater below $57,300, potentially driving prices towards the $52,000/$55,000 target range.

The imminent Fed decision casts a significant shadow over the cryptocurrency market. A more hawkish stance from the Fed, signaling continued interest rate hikes and a prolonged fight against inflation, could further dampen risk appetite and weigh on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. However, if the Fed takes a more dovish approach, acknowledging economic headwinds and hinting at a slowdown in rate hikes, the market could potentially see a relief rally.

As the Fed's decision approaches, investors remain cautious, closely monitoring the situation and awaiting clarity on the central bank's policy outlook. The cryptocurrency market is likely to remain volatile in the short term, with Bitcoin's performance serving as a key barometer of risk sentiment and the broader macroeconomic environment.
