Bill Belichick agrees to coach North Carolina football team in 'stunning development'

Bill Belichick has agreed to become the next head football coach at UNC-Chapel Hill, the university announced on Thursday.

Belichick will sign a five-year, $50 million deal, which still needs to be approved by the university's board.

Belichick's hiring was first reported by Inside Carolina's Adam Smith on Wednesday.

"In a stunning development that has progressed from implausible to an actuality, North Carolina is finalizing a contract to land Bill Belichick as its next football coach, Inside Carolina learned from multiple sources on Wednesday," Smith wrote.

Belichick, when asked about the meetings during his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show Monday (December 9), said he's had a "couple of good conversations and we'll see how it goes." He also compared college football to the NFL during the interview.

"I think there's a lot of similarities," Belichick said. "Obviously, the level of experience is different for the players, but I think a lot of the fundamentals of the game, the techniques, the strategies, the preparation, I think there's a lot of carryover from one level to another whether it's high school, college or the pros."
