Bhutan plans to triple its Bitcoin mining capacity by partnering with Bitdeer Technologies Group. The move comes ahead of the anticipated halving, an event that reduces the rewards for Bitcoin miners by half. Bhutan's decision to boost its mining operations aims to offset the potential revenue loss.

Bhutan Augments Bitcoin Mining Operations in Anticipation of Halving Event
Bhutan has significantly expanded its Bitcoin mining capacity in preparation for the upcoming halving event. According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Bitdeer Technologies Group, a Nasdaq-listed cryptocurrency mining company, has partnered with Bhutan's investment arm, Druk Holding & Investments, to provide state-of-the-art technology that will triple the country's mining capacity.
This collaboration is expected to double Bhutan's mining capacity by 500 megawatts (MW) by the first half of 2025, bringing its total capacity to 600 MW. As noted by Matt Linghui Kong, Bitdeer's chief business officer, this expansion will establish Bhutan as a major player in the global Bitcoin mining landscape.
Bhutan's decision to embrace Bitcoin mining is rooted in its economic recovery efforts. In 2023, the Himalayan kingdom experienced a severe economic contraction of 10% due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the country struggled with declining foreign exchange reserves, rising nonperforming loans, and high youth unemployment, it looked to cryptocurrency mining as a potential revenue generator.
The halving event, a code upgrade that occurs approximately every four years, poses a potential threat to Bitcoin miners' revenue streams. During this event, the number of newly created Bitcoins is cut in half, effectively reducing miners' block rewards by 50%.
However, this halving event also typically triggers a surge in demand for Bitcoin due to its increased scarcity. Investors are more likely to pay higher premiums for smaller fractions of the asset as its supply diminishes. Consequently, miners who can consistently produce Bitcoins through efficient operations are poised to benefit from this heightened demand.
In anticipation of the halving event, Bitcoin miners have been ramping up their operations globally. Energy consumption for cryptocurrency mining has reached a record high of 19.6 gigawatts (GW) this month, up from 12.1 GW in 2023. This surge in energy use reflects the increased competition among miners to secure block rewards.
Bhutan's decision to expand its Bitcoin mining capacity is a strategic move that aligns with the global trend of increased mining activity ahead of the halving event. By partnering with Bitdeer, Bhutan aims to establish itself as a reliable and efficient mining hub, capturing a significant share of the revenue generated from the production of the world's most valuable cryptocurrency.
