Baker Mayfield Trolled Himself After Buccaneers Overtime Win Over Panthers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers narrowly avoided a third overtime loss this season, managing to eke out a win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday night. The victory snapped a free football losing streak and brought them within striking distance of the first-place Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South standings.

Despite the win, the Bucs still find themselves behind the Falcons due to Atlanta owning the tiebreaker. However, with the Falcons facing a tough matchup against the Minnesota Vikings next week and the Bucs playing the Las Vegas Raiders, the standings could quickly flip in December.

Baker Mayfield poked fun at himself after the game, revealing that the Bucs decided to send out defensive captain Lavonte David for the coin toss in overtime instead of him. Tampa Bay won the coin toss, a change that ultimately made a big difference in the outcome of the game.

"I think we found [that] the recipe for success in overtime is I don't do the coin toss," Mayfield joked when asked by the media about his thoughts on overtime.

The lighthearted moment showcased the positive vibes within the Bucs locker room despite the tense game. However, things could have been different based on how the game unfolded earlier on.

The Bucs initially struggled, committing dumb mistakes and stupid penalties that allowed the Panthers to stay in the game. Baker also made some bad decisions that gifted Carolina some points.

Fortunately for the Bucs, the Panthers also left six points on the field with missed field goals, and Dave Canales' decision to not go for two points after a late Adam Thielen touchdown helped the Bucs force overtime.

Ultimately, Todd Bowles' defense broke down on Carolina's final offensive drive of regulation, nearly costing Tampa Bay the game and its season. However, things worked out in overtime, and while fans may still be processing the events of the game, the Bucs locker room appears to be in a great place.
