A recent report by River reveals that Americans dominate Bitcoin in total supply, mining, and investment, highlighting its position as the global leader in the cryptocurrency ecosystem as of May 2025.

A recent report by River has revealed that America’s influence in the Bitcoin ecosystem is more substantial than previously thought.
As of May 2025, approximately 40% of Bitcoin’s total supply, valued at $790 billion, is held by Americans. This statistic provides a staggering snapshot of the U.S.’s wealth tied to the cryptocurrency.
As the global leader in both venture funding and crypto development funding, the U.S. holds 70% and 82% shares respectively. Additionally, 79.2% of Bitcoin ETF ownership is held by U.S. investors.
Major financial institutions like BlackRock and Fidelity are spearheading this endeavor, and as of May 14, Bitcoin ETFs have reached all-time highs with over $41 billion in inflows.
On the other hand, this level of centralization in a decentralized ecosystem, where a small group of U.S.-based entities could potentially exert significant influence over Bitcoin’s market dynamics, is a concern.
Furthermore, the U.S. controls 36% of the global hash rate with over 40 mining sites exceeding 10 MW capacity, a shift from 2021 when China held over 50% and now ranks second with 26% and 39 sites.
The U.S.’s rise in mining power coincides with China’s 2021 crackdown on crypto mining, which drove miners to North America.
The report also mentions that over 150 Bitcoin companies are headquartered in the U.S., employing more than 20,000 Americans, solidifying the country’s role as a hub for crypto innovation.
