Aetherdrift: Magic's New Set Brings Racing and Car Culture to the Multiverse

Jan 22, 2025 at 02:01 am

Magic: The Gathering often likes to put its own twist on pop culture. We just had Duskmourn: House of Horror to bring the modern horror scares, and before that we've had the Wild West in Thunder Junction, Greek mythology in Theros, and even gangster movies in Streets of New Capenna. Now it's time for racing and car culture to get its time to shine, with Aetherdrift.

Aetherdrift: Magic's New Set Brings Racing and Car Culture to the Multiverse

Magic: The Gathering is set to ignite a passion for racing and car culture with its upcoming set, Aetherdrift, set to hit the scene on February 14.

Ten teams will compete in a no-holds-barred race for the Aetherspark across three distinct planes: Avishkar (formerly known as Kaladesh), Amonkhet, and Muraganda. This race will be showcased in one of the widest-spanning Magic sets in recent times. Here are all the cards you can expect to find when the set drops.

Check back daily, as new cards will be revealed through January 31.

Latest Reveals - January 21, 2025

We're at the starting line for Aetherdrift's previews, with its debut day unveiling two new mechanics, all ten teams' leader cards, and more than a few Vehicles to crew. We've already got a good idea of what this set will entail now, so who knows what the first few laps will offer?

White

As Aetherdrift is a multicolour faction set spread across ten teams, each mono-colour will likely fall into one of four teams. For white, that'll be the blue/white robotic Guidelight Voyagers, the black/white Zombie-Human tag team of The Champions of Amonkhet, the green/white Mount-focused Alacrian Quickbeasts, and the current champions of the Ghirapur Grand Prix, the red/white Cloudspire Racing Team.

Blue

Blue is home to some of the grand prixs' most interesting teams. The Guidelight Voyagers are joined by Duskmourn's Speed Demons team, lead by none other than Winter, the Shark Pirates of the Chordatan Keelhaulers, and Avishkar's own Aether Rangers.

Black

Alongside the Speed Demons and the Champions of Amonkhet, black also features The Endriders, Mad Max-esque racers from the apocalyptic plane of Gastal. We also meet The Speedbrood, a species of humanoid insects whose main purpose in life is to grow into one of the living Vehicles they use in their races.

Red

Kylem's Cloudspire Racing Team, the Keelhaulers, and The Endriders meet their match in red with the Goblin Rocketeers. These aren't your usual Goblins; they're intrepid explorers from a plane sealed off from the rest of the Multiverse with a 'Velocity Limit', aiming to spread the glory of their god of speed, the BOOSTGOD!

Green

The Rocketeers, Aether Rangers, Speedbrood, and Quickbeasts aren't the only factions that call green home. On the plane of Muraganda, all manners of beasts, Shamans, and Druids weild the forces of nature to contend with the multiverse they've just been introduced to.

Multicolor

Of course, Aetherdrift is a multicolour set, so many of the cards will be split between the ten two-colour team

Colorless

Expect to see plenty of artifacts and interesting lands in this set, like The Aetherspark - the first ever equipment Planeswalker that can build up its loyalty safe from being attacked by your opponent.

Special Guests

Aetherdrift will come with ten Special Guest cards, which can be found in Play and Collector boosters, but also in a gold foil treatment in the set's booster topper packs.

Commander Decks

Aetherdrift is starting the year off a little slower, with just two Commander decks rather than the usual four. These decks bring back mechanics that helped popularize Avishkar and Amonkhet in the past, with the former giving us our third Energy-centric deck in a year, and the latter giving us lots of Zombies to reanimate.

Living Energy

Eternal Might

Magic: The Gathering

Created by Richard Garfield in 1993, Magic: The Gathering (MTG) has become one of the biggest tabletop collectible card games in the world. Taking on the role of a Planeswalker, players build decks of cards and do battle with other players. In excess of 100 additional sets have added new cards to the library, while the brand has expanded into video games, comics, and more.
