Aave DAO Mulls Fee Redistribution to Tokenholders

Apr 07, 2024 at 04:02 pm

A proposal is under consideration at decentralized lending platform Aave (AAVE), discussing the activation of a "fee switch" to distribute fees to holders. This was shared by Aave Chan Initiative founder Marc Zeller, who hinted at the possibility of implementing fees for Aave stakers in a prior post. A "fee switch" typically refers to a mechanism that enables the distribution of fees collected to tokenholders or participants in a protocol.

Aave DAO Mulls Fee Redistribution to Tokenholders

Aave DAO Considers Activation of Fee Switch for Tokenholder Distribution

April 7, 2023

The decentralized lending platform Aave (AAVE) is exploring the implementation of a "fee switch" mechanism, according to a recent proposal shared on the X social platform by Aave Chan Initiative founder Marc Zeller. The move, if approved, would see a portion of the protocol's fees distributed to holders of the Aave token (AAVE).

Zeller's proposal suggests activating the fee switch next week, citing Aave's current net profits of approximately $60 million per year, equivalent to five years of operational costs.

A Decentralized Lending Powerhouse

Aave is a leading decentralized lending and borrowing platform that operates on multiple blockchain networks. It allows users to borrow cryptocurrencies by providing collateral in another cryptocurrency. The platform is governed by the Aave decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), which consists of AAVE token holders.

In a previous post on X, Zeller hinted at the possibility of introducing fees for Aave stakers. On March 16, he wrote, "A new iteration of the safety module will suggest distributing fees to stakers."

Fee Switch: Explained

A "fee switch" typically refers to a feature or mechanism within a system or platform that allows for the activation or deactivation of specific fees or charges. In DeFi protocols like Aave, a fee switch might enable the distribution of fees collected from transactions or other activities to tokenholders or participants in the protocol.

The fee switch would empower Aave DAO to control and adjust fee-related policies in line with the platform's objectives and needs. Recently, Aave DAO approved changes to the staking fees for its stablecoin GHO to maintain the token's peg to the US dollar.

If Aave DAO decides to activate the fee switch, it would follow the lead of Frax Finance, which recently endorsed a proposal to reintroduce its own fee switch.

Recent Developments

On April 5, AaveDAO discussed potential restrictions on Dai (DAI) collateral. Risk management advisors from Chaos Labs presented a proposal advocating a 12% reduction in Dai loan-to-value ratios (LTVs), while Zeller proposed a more drastic 75% reduction.

Separately, Aave launched a proposal to set DAI's LTV to 0% across all Aave deployments and remove sDAI incentives from the Merit program starting with Merit Round 2. This move is seen as a response to MakerDAO's rapid D3M plan, which increased the DAI credit line by approximately 600 million DAI in a month.

Meanwhile, decentralized exchange Uniswap (UNI) is in the final stages of preparing for its own fee switch proposal, which is expected to be introduced in mid-April following a successful temperature check.

As the DeFi landscape continues to evolve, the activation of a fee switch on Aave could have significant implications for the platform and its token holders. The Aave DAO will ultimately decide whether to proceed with the proposal, based on its assessment of the benefits and risks involved.
