Understanding BTC Perpetual Contracts
1. BTCUSDT perpetual futures are the most actively traded instruments on Binance Futures, denominated in USDT and settled in USDT.
2. These contracts have no expiration date and rely on a funding mechanism to anchor their price to the BTC spot index.
3. Funding occurs every 8 hours and is paid by longs to shorts or vice versa depending on whether the mark price trades above or below the index price.
4. The funding rate is calculated using the premium index and interest rate differential, with historical rates publicly available via Binance’s API.
5. Unlike quarterly futures, perpetuals allow continuous exposure without rollover risk or settlement disruption.
Opening a Long or Short Position
1. Log into your Binance account and navigate to the Futures tab, then select USDⓈ-M Futures.
2. Choose BTCUSDT from the trading pair list and ensure the margin mode is set to isolated or cross based on your risk preference.
3. Adjust leverage using the slider—common settings range from 5x to 20x for balanced risk-reward calibration.
4. Enter position size in USDT or number of contracts, then select order type: market, limit, stop-market, or take-profit-market.
5. Click “Buy” to open a long or “Sell” to open a short—execution confirms instantly if liquidity permits.
Managing Open Positions
1. Active positions appear under the “Positions” panel showing entry price, unrealized PnL, margin ratio, and liquidation price.
2. You can add to an existing position by placing another order in the same direction without closing first.
3. Partial close functionality allows reducing exposure while retaining part of the original trade.
4. Trailing stop orders dynamically adjust stop-loss levels as price moves favorably, locking in gains without manual intervention.
5. The position margin can be manually adjusted upward to increase buffer against liquidation during volatility spikes.
Risk Parameters and Liquidation Mechanics
1. Liquidation occurs when the margin balance falls below maintenance margin, triggering auto-deleveraging or insurance fund absorption.
2. Maintenance margin for BTCUSDT starts at 0.4% for 10x leverage and increases progressively up to 1.5% at 125x.
3. The liquidation price is recalculated in real time and displayed next to each open position—this value shifts with mark price movement.
4. Auto-deleveraging (ADL) activates only when the insurance fund is insufficient, targeting profitable counterparties ranked by leverage and PnL.
5. Initial margin requirement is derived from position size multiplied by 1/leverage, and must be fully funded before order submission.
Closing Positions and Settlement
1. To close a long, place a sell order matching the exact size; to close a short, place a buy order of equal magnitude.
2. Market orders execute immediately against available liquidity, while limit orders wait for specified price conditions.
3. Realized PnL appears in the wallet history upon closure and is credited instantly to the futures wallet balance.
4. Fees are deducted at execution—taker fees start at 0.04% and maker rebates begin at 0.02%, adjustable with BNB fee discount.
5. No final settlement ceremony exists for perpetuals—the contract remains live until explicitly closed or liquidated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I hold a BTCUSDT perpetual position indefinitely?Yes, as long as sufficient margin is maintained and no liquidation event occurs.
Q: What happens if funding is negative for three consecutive periods?Funding payments accrue continuously; negative funding means longs receive payments from shorts each interval.
Q: Is it possible to switch between isolated and cross margin modes mid-position?No, margin mode must be selected prior to opening a position and cannot be altered afterward.
Q: Does Binance display the index price used for mark price calculation?Yes, the BTCUSDT index price is visible on the trading interface and updated in real time using weighted averages from major spot exchanges.
