How Does MEXC Futures Liquidation Work? Complete Explanation
MEXC Futures enforces liquidation when margin falls below 3% maintenance level, using real-time Chainlink-derived mark price; positions close automatically via internal matching, with deficits covered by a transparent insurance fund.

Futures Liquidation Mechanics on MEXC
1. Liquidation is triggered when a trader’s margin balance falls below the maintenance margin requirement set by MEXC for a given futures contract.
2. The platform calculates the liquidation price in real time using the mark price, which is derived from multiple external price feeds including Chainlink and Binance Smart Chain oracles.
3. Once the mark price reaches or crosses the liquidation threshold, the system automatically initiates forced position closure without manual intervention.
4. Orders are executed against the order book at the best available price within the liquidity depth, prioritizing speed and minimal slippage under volatile conditions.
5. After execution, any remaining unrealized PnL is settled, and the final equity is adjusted to reflect realized gains or losses plus fees.
Margin Structure and Thresholds
1. Initial margin is calculated as a percentage of notional value—typically 4% for BTC/USDT and ETH/USDT perpetual contracts on MEXC Futures.
2. Maintenance margin is set lower than initial margin—commonly at 3%—and serves as the critical floor level before liquidation becomes active.
3. Margin ratio is continuously monitored; if it drops to or below the maintenance threshold, the position enters liquidation warning state.
4. Auto-deleveraging is not implemented on MEXC Futures; instead, the platform relies on an insurance fund funded by trading fees and liquidation penalties to cover shortfall scenarios.
5. Traders may deposit additional collateral at any time to raise their margin ratio above the maintenance level and avoid liquidation.
Insurance Fund and Risk Containment
1. The MEXC Futures Insurance Fund accumulates contributions from a portion of every taker fee and 100% of liquidation penalty fees.
2. When a position is liquidated at a loss exceeding the available margin, the deficit is covered exclusively by the insurance fund—not by other users’ balances.
3. Fund balance is publicly visible on the MEXC Futures dashboard and updated in real time after each liquidation event.
4. No cross-margin borrowing is permitted across different futures contracts; each position maintains isolated margin accounting.
5. Historical data shows the fund has maintained positive coverage ratios across all major market crashes since Q2 2023, including events involving >30% daily volatility in BTC and ETH.
Order Execution During Liquidation
1. Liquidation orders are routed directly to the internal matching engine rather than broadcasted to the public order book.
2. Execution occurs at the mark price or the best available bid/ask depending on direction—long positions close at the best available bid, shorts at the best ask.
3. Slippage is capped at 0.5% of the mark price for standard contracts; higher caps apply only to low-liquidity altcoin pairs with explicit warnings during order placement.
4. Partial liquidations are not supported—entire positions are closed in one atomic transaction regardless of size.
5. A timestamped liquidation receipt is generated and stored on-chain via MEXC’s Layer-2 settlement layer for auditability and dispute resolution.
Post-Liquidation Settlement Protocol
1. All open orders associated with the liquidated position are canceled immediately upon trigger confirmation.
2. Unrealized PnL is converted into realized PnL and added to or subtracted from the user’s wallet balance in USDT.
3. Any residual margin remaining after covering losses and fees is returned to the user’s main account within 12 seconds.
4. The insurance fund absorbs any negative equity shortfall, and no clawback mechanism exists for recovering losses from the trader beyond the used margin.
5. Users receive an email and in-app notification containing full details: liquidation price, executed price, fee breakdown, and final equity adjustment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Does MEXC use bankruptcy price or mark price for liquidation calculations?Mark price is exclusively used. Bankruptcy price is displayed for informational purposes only and does not influence liquidation triggers.
Q2: Can a liquidated position be reopened immediately after settlement?Yes. There is no cooldown period or restriction on placing new orders once the liquidation process completes and funds are returned.
Q3: Are stop-loss orders executed before or after liquidation triggers?Stop-loss orders are processed prior to liquidation checks. If a stop-loss executes successfully, liquidation will not occur for that position.
Q4: Is there any difference between isolated margin and cross-margin liquidation logic?Liquidation thresholds remain identical, but isolated margin confines risk to a single position while cross-margin allows drawing from other positions’ available equity—though MEXC currently only supports isolated margin for futures.
