Coin collectors are checking their piggy banks and wallets after a rare 1p coin sold for a fortune.

The Royal Mint Museum website states: "The banks possessed such large stocks of pennies in 1933 that it was not necessary to strike any more for general circulation. But in August 1970, thieves broke into the Church of St Cross, Middleton, near Leeds, and stole a set of coins under its foundation stone.

Speaking about the coin on TikTok, user @ndainternet shared how one sold for £127,000 at auction, with another, presumed to be in a worse condition, selling for £86,000.

He said: "It's because these King George 5th coins are considered to be a very rare. Mainly because they're around 100 years old and so they're considered to be a historical item. If you have one, it might be worth a lot of money."
